I am buiding a 390 and have the opportunity to get a set of heads, c6ae-6090 r, would this be the head of choice or are there others that may be better (excluding the famed cj heads). look forward to your feedback....
The engineering number is real John. Maybe the book lists a part number?
The C6-R heads have tall intake ports and open combustion chambers like the early heads, with exhaust ports set higher like the later heads. Often referred to as the "poor man's CJ heads," they can be worked for more high RPM performance. Buying oversize valves and port work can cost pretty close to the aluminum E-Bock heads...or so I've read.

I don't quite understand, the C6AE R shown in the photo is in Steve's book. I aint da Dummy that swears by his books, but Steve's How To Rebuild Your Big Block Ford book is usually considered pretty accurate by many readers here, meaning it is not full to the roof with mistakes like many others.
The OP asked about C6AE 6090 R not C6AE R. Did I miss something?

I've heard others berate that book's accuracy. I think it's money well spent, but not a definitive resource.
I went out and looked at my heads again, looked through the pics I've taken, different markings on each side.
Mikey is right..Steves book has been shot full of holes..just not as many as others ..and the C6-R head can be made to be a real nice flowing head...But as mentioned be prepared to spend some money to make them flow depending on the HP your looking to get out of your build..
