I bought the (XLT) truck off of the lot with the options that I thought that I wanted. It took a long time to find the right truck, but eventually I succeeded - I thought.
Found out that I didn't understand the option packages well enough and assumed that it would have a compass - wrong.
Thought I didn't need the upgraded message center - wrong.
Wanted reverse sensors but the truck did not have them from the factory, so I had the dealer add them. They botched the installation and did not originally include the mute function and they do not work as well as the factory sensors. Ended up getting a full refund, but it was certainly a mistake.
Thought I wanted Hill Decent - wrong, probably won't use it.
Didn't think I wanted Sync but bought it anyway for the handsfree capability - got lucky and have no idea what the heck I was thinking.
Please tell me that I am not the only one that got so much wrong.
The only thing I missed was the universal remote garage door opener. I was sure that was included in the Ultimate package, dealer didn't say anything about it. No big deal, but would have been much better and more convenient than the remote that came with my opener. Other than that, I was very happy with the options (but I did order my truck).
I wish I'd gotten the Nav system and the garage door opener. My 2008 250 Lariat had it. You should see me reaching for my visor button that's not there everytime I leave work or come home. I thought I'd rather have the two tone paint and the chrome package over the Nav.
I'm happy with all of my options. The only thing I wish I got were the roof marker lights. There are only a few options I left off the truck because I found mine at a local dealer with 15 miles on it.
I like the options that came on my XLT, some of them I could have done without though.
Love the Message/Information center, SYNC is nice, I have the door pad (could come in handy someday if I lock myself out), really like the cable lock in the bed.
Things I could have done without include, FX4 package, adjustable foot pedals, the key pad. I would have rather had the backup camera ( I will have to do an after market backup camera).
Overall, I am happy with what I got for the price, of course I would have loved the nav package, but I would have spent another 5 or 6 thousand for a Lariat (at least)...not worth it to me. I got the 6.7L Diesel and that was the main objective!!!
I ordered mine with everything including the factory 5th wheel hitch. Funny thing though, I've been driving it for a week and a half thinking I forgot to order the adjustable pedals. It was standard on my '06 Lariat so I assumed it would be part of the ultimate package. Well it is, I just found the switch on the side of the column this morning. I thought it would be in the same place on the side of the dash like the older trucks. I smiled all the way to work...
I didn't order the bed extender thinking it wasn't really useful. Turns out, after picking one up from the dealer I use it all the time. It's great for smaller loads and extends over the tailgate to hold in 4X8 sheets. It cost me $425 at the dealer and I believe that's more than including it in an order.
I also got mine off the lot, but it is pretty much stacked to the gills. If I had it to do over again and had the opportunity to order one, I'd probably get the exact same truck, but get the 1-ton. If I didn't drive it to work every day I'd probably get the long bed too. With that option, I'd most likely get the 5th wheel prep and hitch from the factory, along with the in-bed 7-pin.
I got mine off the lot. If I was going to order it I'd get it just the same except add clearance lights, add upfitter switches, and center console instead of the middle front seat.
I'm going to fix all those missing items soon.
.. switches and harness ordered but harness still on back order
.. clearance lights I have but that harness is still on back order too
.. console I'm still trying to find somebody who'd rather have the seat.
the number one thing I would have changed was I would have gotten the f350 instead of the 250.
I don't get why people want the backup sensors when the backup camera is only like $200 more.
I could have done without the adjustable pedals and the power seat, never use those, I don't have the fancy message center, but I am ok with that. all those fancy options like the lariet etc REALLY add up and mean I would be spending over 50k for the truck, I just don't see the point, I think come resale time the heavy optioned trucks are going to take a big beating.

I got my dealer to give me the bed extender at the price on Ford's website. I just built my truck online and added it in. When I showed them they took the hit on it and ordered it for me. It is a pain that it costs more to get it from the dealer.

Cowboy I suppose that is just another in the long line of mistakes, but my rationale was that I had them on my '05 and could back up to my boat the first time, latch on and go. Also saved me a few times with people walking behind me in parking lots and I suddenly hear the beep. Guess it was a comfort factor with the boat and the audible sound instead of watching a screen. I dunno.
Guess if we were all alike, they would only make one truck with standard options.
I am always amazed how manufacturers decide upon options and how they put them in packages. A good example is the Lariat Ultimate package. Why in the world would you NOT include the in visor garage door opener? Or my favorite mystery this model year: you can't order the idle shutdown option if you have selected backup sensors!
As for lot vehicles at dealerships, I think dealers fall into two camps. Those that understand what options customers are likely to buy from previous sales and those who select option combinations with the same effort they do when doing "quick picks" for PowerBall. What I think is funny is when you see a lot vehicle with options that make no sense. Like a diesel truck, with snow plow package an NO electronic locking rear end...
I am one of those buyers who does a tremendous amount of research on the available options before I place an order. This is why I have always ordered vehicles. I just am not satisfied with a vehicle that has most of the options I want or one that has extra options.
