I have a 1983 ranger V6 and it has the EECIV system with a feedback carb. Does anyone out there know if it is smog legal to do a duraspark conversion
in california? If not is there any other options to get rid of this system?
HELP I'M GETTING SCREWED IN CALIFORNIA !!
Personally, I would go with a complete standalone fuel injection system with coilpacks. You can build a Megasquirt and use MSD coils. You would need to modify the intake manifold to run fuel injectors. But at the end of the day, the truck will run better than any carb setup, and your smog problems will be history. You could also swap the system from a newer fuel injected motor.
I highly doubt The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia, would look kindly upon Dura-Sparking your Ranger. They are hard nosed about 'Original condition" of emission control parts on vehicles that were so equipped to comply originally.
Even if you went EFI, they would still not be impressed............We feel your pain.
FYI: CA smog tests all 1976 and newer vehicles. All the correct emission related parts for the specific year must be in place and in working order.
If a vehicle cannot pass a smog test, it cannot be registered. If the parts are obsolete, there is no waiver. It's fix it, or park it.
If the polizei see a vehicle with expired license tags, they have the legal right to have it towed to the official police garage (storage lot). It doesn't matter where the vehicle is parked.
The registered owner of the vehicle is then liable for the towing charges and the daily storage fees.
If you do not register your vehicle before the tags expire, the fee can double within a month..and escalate from there.
If you continue to ignore the notices from the DMV, they can take the amount due from your bank account. There's a fat service charge tagged on by the bank.
If you do not have a bank account, or sufficent funds, the Franchise Tax Board will contact your employer and have them attach your pay check until the amount due is paid.

There used to be areas of Cali that were out of the clean air act, where you could register a non compliant vehicle(false address) and get away with it...........I did when I was in the AF down there, but that was the early 80s.......Times have probably changed.
At one time in some rural counties, there were no smog tests, T/E (Thermactor Emission-smog pump), Evaporative Emission, Cat Converters and other related emissions crap (except for the PCV system) was not required.
Times have changed. And...it could get worse. At one time CA smog tested ALL 1950 and newer vehicles! Retrofit kits to install IMCO, PCV were available for vehicles that did not come with these systems.
Then CA changed the year vehicles were required to be tested, it's now 1976. But...recently, the idiots in Sacramento have been discussing changing the year from 1976...to 1970!!
The recent election didn't change anything, only made matters worse, the same liberal 'do-gooders' were re-elected. And...horror of horrors...we are now saddled with Governor 'Moonbeam' again.
I see things HAVE changed.
I used to use a guys address of his vacation house in S. Lake Tahoe to register my, no smog Mustang.
No questions asked at the DMV, it worked well.
In the "back country" the smog testing requirements are a tiny bit more relaxed. Where I live in rural San Diego county, the testing does not require a dyno run as it would in the city.
