Scantools: Innova, Actron or....

I'm taking the plunge and getting a scantool. Just trying to decide on the best one. Innova and Actron seem to be the most popular but are there any others? Any advice from someone who knows and uses scantools would be appreciated.

How generic does it have to be? In other words, are you just going to use it on a Ford, or a whole range of brands?
