My wife and I are looking for a new vehicle something a lot bigger than our 05 eqinox. Since ford is the only american company that didn't take a bail out I'm leaning toward them. I also know the excusion came diesel which is awsome. But it dosen't look like they still make the excusion? I would have to buy used any way. So Whats the pros and cons of Excusion owner ship? Specificly fuel mileage and reliableity. Thanks for the advice
The Ex is awesome, hauls anything, pulls anything and is the ultimate highway cruiser.
They stopped building them in 05 and now sell for a premium because there is nothing else like them. The cons on the diesel are extra repair costs and maintenance is a must, the diesel pros are power and 20 MPG. The V-10 is reliable but likes to drink fuel, plenty of power too. The Ex is also big, harder to park and garage but you can haul 9 people in it with room to spare. You will get strange looks from the greenies because they hate large SUVs they do not understand why we love our Ex's.
The huge pro is safety. A light 8500lbs vs your everyday vehicle. The cons....Yes, diesels are expensive to up keep, but if you take care of it, it will run forever. My only other con is that its hard to see what's under me as I'm merging into another lane.
I recently went through this, got rid of expedition with 5.4L was getting 11mpg...got sick of it! I also researched with other Ex owners and the "super-duty" thing. Its very impressive, the brakes..the springs the whole thing is built to last. I found one with 57,00o miles a diesel and could not be happier.
...except a 5th wheel trailer. Not because it is not powerful enough, but there is no way of attaching a gooseneck hitch. If you could find a way, then it could do it.
Another pro is the value of these vehicles are going up. IMO, Ford makes the best trucks. Most company fleet trucks are Ford.
Con, it's hard to wash. I need a step ladder to wash the roof and get to the center of the hood.
jh - piece-o-cake to wash @ the $3 exterior wash right down the street
I take tremendous pride in the fact that I've never washed any of my 3 excursions going back to the 02
not worth my time nor the water @ my water rates out here in the country !
but to the Original Poster === just like with ANY used vehicle - do your research and you will find a good vehicle...
116k HARD miles on mine and still love it.... we usually take turns trading either mine or hers every few years, but the wife is getting 3 new ones in a row now that I've found MINE
We'll these sound great, I'd like to find one. Keep going tho I'm liking all the comments. I was surprised to here 20mpg my small v-6 equinox only gets 24-26 on the highway!
I sold my 2000 v 10 with 175000 on it to buy a 250 diesel I regret selling the bus everyday. It was the best vehicle I ever owned, and I owned a lot!!!!
Yes, the diesel Excursion will last forever as long as you don't mind the repair bills on the 6.0L diesel. There was a new subject posted here yesterday about a wheelchair bound person on a fixed income now looking at a $5,000 repair on 6.0 head gaskets. They have my sympathy. And they also understand why I passed on the diesel when shopping for an Excursion.
The later year V-10 engines will easily last 250,000 to 300,00 miles if serviced properly and taken care of.
The Expedition XL replaced the Excursion. It's actually a pretty nice vehicle. But, based on overall appearance, I would buy a Suburban 2500 or Yukon XL 2500 before buying an Expedition XL.
I also haven't washed my Excursion in about 3 years. We have a pretty good automated car wash that does it all for $10.00. First it sprays a pre-soak cleaner over the entire vehicle.... twice. Then a rinse cycle. Next it applies a pink looking clear coat wax and a "spot free" rinse. This stuff actually works like ArmorAll on the black rubber around the windows, leaves them shiny and glossy. Then a very high speed blower drys the Excursion totally. The process also cleans the chrome wheels to a new appearance.
The only thing I really have to do to keep my Excursion looking new is take a Brillo soap pad and clean the white letters on the tires about once a year.
I was looking for space and capability while getting gas mileage. It's a tall order and something that could only be achieved with the excursion Freeway i get anywhere between 20-22 cruising at an average of 70mph and the high ground clearence and solid axles allow this thing to be very good offroad as well. It was perfect for me since i travel a lot and do end up in the boonies for camping and what not. While my friend with his suburban 2500 6.0 is averaging close to 12 on the freeway at 70 and i can average 15-16 in stop and go traffic. Amazing vehicle... lastly 7.3 FTW!!

I have owned several Suburbans over the years and now own my 04 Ex. By far it's the largest SUV ever and it handles like a large SUV. The Suburbans I have owned drove more like cars than trucks. Transitioning from an Eqinox to an Ex will be much different, just trying to be honest! I will own the Ex until the wheels fall off of it I like it so much! The V10 and V8 gassers will drink down the gas something fierce and to me they feel quite under powered! BUT.........the diesel Excursions can cost you much more up front and when they need repairs it's not cheap! I bought the 6.0 and have dropped $7500 into the motor with only 80K miles on it! Id get an 03 7.3 if you go the diesel route, the 6.0's are more risky if you choose that way!
My Excursion gets 16-17mpgs in town and 18.5-21mpgs highway. It just comes down to how long you will own the Excursion. If your a 3-5 year owner get a gasser, but if your thinking 6-10 years the extra cost of the Diesel is worth it in fuel savings over the loooong run!
How many miles do intend to put on an Excursion? I ask because I wanted a diesel, but the number crunching said I would not see any savings from better MPG until AFTER I put over 175K miles on one. After 150k miles, most vehicles start getting long in the tooth IMHO. The money saved from going diesel will buy all the gas most folks will ever need. FWIW, I'm on my second Ex ... the first was an '01 Limited V10 4WD, and my current one is an '05 E.B. V10 4WD.
EDIT TO ADD: I am in no way bashing diesels. Like I said above, I wanted one ... I just couldn't justify buying one. If you have one, I am somewhat jealous.
I've got an 03 gasser V10 and absolutely love this thing. About washing it, I always worry when I pull in to one of those auto wash things, afraid it's gonna hit the dang thing, haha. With 3 growing boys, sports stuff, band stuff, 2 yorkies that enjoy their space, frequent camping trips and driving trips up in the mountains and all around places, I wouldn't own anything else.
we bought a 2000 excursion limited v10 4x4 about 1 month ago.
Pro's
1. HUGE
2. Tows anything
3. Rides Great - Ranchero's and rear spring helpers help when hauling
4. If I run into another car I win every time
5. It is an oddity
6. The v10's are rock solid seen one on ebay before I bought my current one that had 760K on a v10 and it was running just fine.
Con's
1. HUGE
2. Gas mileage ---- lol I cant type it without laughing
3. Hard to find, i got very lucky with mine
4. I noticed that given any throttle the engine and exhaust noise is load but it is really a truck and that needs to be remembered.
my last excursion saved me from painful injurys, thats another reason i wanted another one. yes my licn plate says 8MPG and it isnt far off but, how much do you pay for safety?
i really see no downside to owning one honestly, but then again look at what i own..nothing really gets better then 10mpg.
they are big, safe and will get you through just about anything(within reason)
i like my V10s, others love there diesels either way you look at it you win IMO because you have a excursion. but the reliablity of the V10 and cheapness is very tempting.
