There are some who claim over 20 mpg. Maybe they are right, but I have never been able to get over 20 unless with a big tail wind. A more average highway fuel economy is 17 mpg at 70 - 75 mph. Around town, expect 13 - 14 mpg with a 6.0L diesel.

The Excursion really shines if you need to carry a lot of people and/or you want to tow a heavy trailer.

Just don't expect it to be "graceful" around town. Comfortable on the highway, but clumsy around town.

Agreed. I never get close to 20 MPG on my stock 6 litre. It is awesome on the highway though.

Getting rid of the stock exhaust made a gigantic difference in mpgs and turbo lag.... I also run an SCT tuner and I get 21 mpgs out on the flats running 75-80!

so it sounds like the only down side is fuel milage and maybe a little large for parking lot kinda stuff. I think I can deal with the 18 mpg or so on the highway. I almost think I saw somewhere that they can seat 9, am I mistaken or was there a model with i guess it had to be a bench front seat? Also, I'm from the pre powerstroke forum and those trucks have a common problem with oil coolers, and one or two other things any thing like that with these?

Forest I have to disagree with the clumsy around town comment

Mine with the Hellwig & SCT handles just fine....
only the stupid drivers out move me in the bumper to bumper traffic.... and I got a BIG asset they don't have...
I can see over most of the traffic and know when lanes are stopping before most THAT allows me to merge into other lanes and keep moving !

backing into parking spots with the park assist is almost a no look process...
line up one side and go !!!!

Agreed! If your coming from a smaller vehicle it might take a week or so to get used to the larger size of the Excursion. Once your used to it it's a piece of cake to drive around town!

On the backing into tight spaces all I hafta say is backup camera.

The standard config was 8. Some optioned were 7 with the middle row captians chairs. Some 9 with the front bench or the front 40/20/40 config seats. If you start with console up front you can swap to the 20 jump seat, as they are all compatible across the super duty platform.

I own a 2000 F. Excursion Limited (v10). i onnly got positive feed back on it. It has been more reliable then my 2006 GMC yukon denali, which i regret buying but my wife has a thing for gmc's.... the youkon denali might be newer but let me say my Ex will outlast that yank. gas milage is good at highway speeds. just my .02 cents ...

Only gripe I have about the X and it is the same for every ford vehicle and seems to be the same for chevy and dodge as well is the lack of rust prevention. You southern guys wouldn't know what I am talking about. I am not braging up another brand here just pointing out some stuff but honda has excellent rust prevention! Take a good look at any honda sometime. Check out under the car/van/truck everything is coated or covered! Brake and fuel lines are coated from the factory and even covered with rubber in lots of places. In many honda they even run the fuel and brake lines inside the vehicle where they never see any salt or moister for that matter. The entire undercarriage is covered with undercoating and not like that cheap crap ford uses on their frames that falls off in 5 years. Also they coat every single nut, bolt, washer, and screw in the entire vehicle. I can go out to my 22 year old civic and break loose any bolt I want with the correct size wrench or socket. 10 years with a ford and some bolts start shrinking from rust, a 9/16" will turn into a 1/2". It sucks.

As you can probably tell I hate rust. Rust makes my every day work way harder than it should be. I can't stand the stuff! I wish american auto makes would simply take a look at a honda and incorporate the same rust prevention.

There are spots on our 94 turbo 7.3 frame that are 1/2 the thickness it was new just from rust. 85% if not more of the work I have had to do on our fleet trucks is rust repair.

I drive mine everyday and I love it.

The only issue is the height when entering parking garages. But, once you know the height of your X, just watch the signs.

Boy, some of you certainly took my "clumsy" comment personally. ha. What else can an 8,000 lb SUV be but clumsy? Sort of a Sumo wrestler in a tutu.

I've also done all the "tricks" (Hellwig, V/B springs, Bilsteins, RAS) on mine and I can put "Midas" almost anywhere I want. I like it, but I would never advise a "newbie" that these trucks handle great. Sorry, just my opinion.

My wife won't drive the Excursion and she had no issue driving our GMC Yukon XL. She loves riding in it, but she doesn't want to drive it. Maybe she knows how much it would grieve me if she ran into something.

I just remind her that the Yukon XL self-destructed when towing our travel trailer. And...that trailer was 2,000 lb lighter than what "Midas" tows on a regular basis.

i understand where your coming from, i didnt take it personaly. i was just going by my own feelings on the subject.

i came from a '96 explorer to my old '04 excursion and i'd say within the first 1/2 hour of driving it i felt totatly comfy with the size and loved it.

but ofcourse everyone is going to encounter differant situations when driving there excursion that may lead one to believe its not the best "city" truck. but considering the amount of crew cab long bed trucks running around the excursion is easy to manuver lol
