We bought ours 3 months ago (2000 V10 4x4) for my wife to car pool. We also have a 2002 Burb that we've had for 2 years that my wife drove daily. We really needed 2 large vehicles. My wife doesn't want to drive the Burb anymore (or anything else). I am SOOO glad I bought it for her, LOL.
The Ex is a different animal in size, feel, and power than anything else on the road. They have the most comfortable seats than any vehicle I've ever ridden in. Take one for an extended test drive and you'll fall in love.
You can haul 8, get 2 weeks of groceries in the cargo area, and tow a 30' travel trailer.
I bought mine to tow. The Durango, w/Hemi, just didn't cut it. Sure, there was power, but at 9 mpg and a 24 gallon tank it took FOREVER to get anywhere. I dreaded camping trips knowing I was stopping every 125 miles for gas. Oh, and towing across the desert southwest added new levels of anxeity.
I found a 2000 Limited, 7.3l with 160k. Not the newest or brightest, but I didn't pay $17k either. so far, I love it. Best part, I know I have a weekend project for me and my sons to work on till they leave for college.
I own an 04 f250 cc 4x4 6.0, and an 01 X v-10 4x4 xlt, for my family of 6 with two 90 lb rots, 5 dirtbikes, offroad camper, we need both. The X gets better mileage than I expected; 9.6 on my wifes short commute, 15@ 70 on flatland w/o wind, the f250 gets 13 in town on winter diesel, 21 avg on two emergency round trips to AZ last year (over the rockies, through storms @ 70-80 stopping only for fuel and a couple powernaps. Both of these trucks are the tool to get you there safely, they can eat miles like nothing else.) We did the math when buying the X and chose the V-10 (8k$ for a clean 01 xlt 4x4 left another 8k$ for fuel). That said, don't be scared of a 6.0, just be picky and spend a little to make sure that the truck is sound(not already in need of headgaskets, EGRor oil coolers). I would take a clean 100k mile 04/05 X, and a 7500$ shop tab, over a new 50k$ suv any day.
Awsome, after all of your guys posts I think I'll have to get one thanks again, If there is more to be said keep going, I'll keep reading.
Yeah 1 more thing! Make sure and buy one from the Southwest, they really hold up insanely good and have ZERO rust! The bottom side of mine looks like the day it was purchased! Arizona is the place to buy if you can!
...except a 5th wheel trailer. Not because it is not powerful enough, but there is no way of attaching a gooseneck hitch. If you could find a way, then it could do it.
Another pro is the value of these vehicles are going up. IMO, Ford makes the best trucks. Most company fleet trucks are Ford.
Con, it's hard to wash. I need a step ladder to wash the roof and get to the center of the hood.
The tow buddy is a sweet setup! Talked to a guy at an rv park last year who towed a 30 foot river behind his Ex. They look very solid in person! They can't sway, you have 4 rear tires supporting the weight, way better than bumper towing. The tow buddy doesn't turn it a solid connection with no left or right movement.
I love my X! 03 eddie 7.3 2wd. Just the X will get 20-22 hwy and not much different in the city. Pulling the 25ft TT and boat at 70mph I get 14.5mpg. Lots of room! Can haul 7-8 people in the morning and 4x8ft sheets of plywood in the evening or vise versa.
Here's a reason to own an Ex - provided you're around 30 years from now you'll be able to tune into Barrett-Jackson and see fully restored Excursions going for some outrageous sum of money and you'll be able to say "I owned one of those back in the day".

We own a 2005, 6.0l Eddie Bauer with 88,000 kms on it. As has been said many times here, if you have a family with 5 children and a large bulldog. The list of vehicles that will fit you and pull a 10000 lb 32 foot travel trailers is fairly short. The Ex does it in style.
I owned another 05 6 liter limited, but the guy who owned it before me chipped it and didn't do the other necessary mods so the heads warped. Cost me $7k, so be careful what you buy.
