I am new to this forum since I traded my 02 7.3 PS last week for a loaded out 09 6.4. This truck is NICE but not too sure yet if this was the smartest thing I've ever done. I wish I would have done a little more research beforehand, but the salesman made me quite a deal and I did it.

I was really surprised at the lack of fuel economy...Is this the reason why they discontinued the engine?

What is everyone doing for mods? Exhaust? Tuner? Fuel mileage?

What is y'all's overall opinion of this truck?

Thanks

you can do some searching on this forum and find answers to all of those questions, but most on here will tell you that spartan is their favorite. and most are picking up a couple mpg.

I'm thinkin we can get up a pretty good sized club of guys who regret (some more than others) giving up their 7.3s. But what's done is done. Fuel consumption is probably number 1. Lots of guys on here have removed their dpf and installed a chip. One big difference from the 7.3 is that these are very very complex motors and many repairs can be very expensive, 5 to 10 large expensive. Those who delete void their warranty. Some try scamming ford by putting it back to stock and I guess some get away with it. just put DPF delete in search and you can read about it for a week. Anyway, welcome to the forum, hang here for a couple weeks and you will learn a lot. This truck is not much of a candidate for shade tree mechanics but there are a couple things that can be toyed with. And there are some guys around getting to the 100K mile level and still running so that's good news. My impression is that this truck requires a very high level of maintinance to keep it out of big trouble. Most of the regulars on here are on the heavy duty use schedule and a couple are on a 3000 mile oil change cycle. So, welcome and enjoy.

And reason for discontinuation I beleive is due to emmisions and ford building motor in-house.

I have an 09 with just under 50,000 miles and love the truck! Have not had to take the truck in for any warranty repairs. I change the oil every 5,000 miles and the fuel filters every 10,000 miles.

Thanks for the inputs. So far I like the truck, there are just so many bells and whistles that this hillbilly really doesn't need, but nice! So is this engine Ford's first attempt at their own Power Stroke? I've heard all these rumors that Ford signed with Cummins...

I've heard, and honestly believe that the biggest reason why Ford designed and built the 6.7 on their own was because of all the issues that developed between Ford and International over the problems with the early 6.0 diesels. If you think about it, it kind of makes sense too. All the big 3 have had someone else build their diesels for them for quite a while now. It seemed to make good sense, but up until the early 6.0 there really hadn't been too much in terms of teething issues when one of the big 3 brought out a new diesel engine, at least not in the same numbers that Ford had with the 6.0. So I think with Ford having to go through all of that, they realized the inherent disadvantages to having an outside company manufacture an entire engine for them all at once and it really soured things. I think it's unfortunate too seeing as the 6.0 turned out to be a pretty good engine once they got the kinks worked out of it. I'm sure that the new Scorpion motor will be great too and it will be interesting to see if GM or Chrysler decide to do any in house diesels in the future.

This was a result of the dispute between International and Ford. The gist of it is the following. International typically would reimburse Ford for the warranty claims due to the various problems with the 6.0. International believed it was a result of users adding too much HP for what the motor could handle and started saying no to Ford when repair bills came in.This led to a long drawn out dispute between Ford and International. As a result, several things happened.

International came out with the 6.4, making it more robust and dependable to help alleviate allot of the problems that came about with the 6.0. This motor was intended to be used for several years in both Ford and International lines.

Ford decided to make their own engine and get out of the contract they had with International supplying engines for Ford due to restrictions International put on Ford regarding what they would accept for warranty repair reimbursement.

So the engine may be discontinued in respects to it's use in Ford vehicles, but it's still being developed and used in other International lines.

Mods depend on what your willing to do or sacrifice. There are typically two camps, those that remove the DPF and regen function, emissions and warranty be damned and those that run tunes that are DPF friendly because their states is controlled by a month of EPA ****'s. I fall in the later.

Personally, I feel the truck and engine are awesome. If it wasn't for the problems between Ford and International, this engine would be used for many many years.

Interesting but I don't think it was gonna last too long as the EPA is hitting diesels with new MPG standards for the 2014 model year. In fact I'm wondering if the 6.7 will be able to meet the standards.

personally I like the motor, emissions is an issue and lower ecomony then should be but far better that I was getting the an 06 5.4.

Emissions is not that hard to live with as long as things are running correctly. For me they are so I just drive the truck.
