Exhaust system suggestions

Hey guys, I just picked up a 93 F150 extended cab, shortbed 4x4 automatic. It has a small tailpipe attached right after the 2nd cat(the truck has 2 cats inline). I want to put an exhaust on it and I like the look of 2 pipes coming out the back. I also dont want it to be too loud(although honestly it isnt very loud with no muffler).

I'm looking for something economical, without being complete crap. I saw Jegs and Summit have 3 inch systems, but I would have to lose my spare tire. Jegs also has a 2.5 inch system, but it says it does'nt work with dual tanks, which I have. What other choices do I have for a kit I can install myself? I'm also considering taking down to the local Meineke and see what they can fab up for me.

thanks!

Please use the search function. There are 1000s of Exhaust threads.

Exactly why it's a PITA to use the search function for something like this...

And that is why the search feature sucks on this forum. ANY where "exhaust" is mentioned in a thread or title it comes up in the search. I just tried it, came up w 17 pages to look at. Who has time to look thru 17 pages of thread only to not find the answer he was looking for.

To the OP. IIRC almost all dual exhaust out the back you will loose your spare tire. For different brands you can look up Flowmaster, Gibson, Pacesetter, Magnaflow ,Borla and i am sure there are more. if you plan on keeping the truck more than a year i would spend the $$ and find a stainless kit

Thats what advanced search is for. Type in exhaust muffler and go to 87-96 F150s section and look for a thread asking about exhaust and there ya go. Not hard.

There is a thread everyday asking the same questions about exhaust.

We need an FAQ.

Thanks guys. 86F150302, I did do a search 1st, I may be new to this site, but I'm not new the internet. And I did search just this gen truck, and I got so many threads I couldnt go thru all of them, but thanks for the suggestion.

Diesel_Brad, thanks for the heads up, I'll have to consider some other options. I do plan on keeping this truck for a while. It will hopefully be the extra vehicle for years to come, I always loved the look and toughness of the 93-96 f150's. Maybe I'll just do single out the side, Dual would really just be for the looks. If anyone else has any suggestions, post em up.

thanks,

Jeff

Hey man your best bet would be to run the same exhaust as stock but upgrade the piping from 2 1/4 to a full 3" piping and get rid of the cat.If your running a cat. heres your options... run no muffler if you want it decently loud, a race muffler if you want it sort of loud and a full size muffler like a magnaflow XL chamber muffler if you want a tame exhaust. Your best bet will to have a custom exhaust done and will be alittle bit more then a exhaust system you would buy from summit racing or so but better fitment... To give you an idea my truck is the same as yours but a 95 and with the 5.8 351w and i ran true duals (each manifold has its own pipe which gives you alittle better performence then just a single exhaust) with 2 1/2" piping with no mufflers or cats. it may work with a spare tire but i took mine off and put it in the bed.

I would take it to a good exhaust shop & have it custom made , some one who can make mandrel bends , the crimped bends in the pic above just makes the exhaust smaller & more restrictive...Lew

+1 on the mandrel bends vs crimped mines just a temp. till i get some LT's, heads and cam. but it dosent really make that much of a diffrence when dual 2 1/2 with no cats. or mufflers is plenty of flow for a stock 351w

I say go get yourself a cheap single in dual out muffler with a pair of over the axle tailpipes and bolt it on in the driveway. With the stock cats on there you're completely wasting your time and money with anything beyond this.

Thanks for the ideas guys, i hate cats as much as the nexy guy, but here in NJ, i dunno about ditching them. Dynomax has a dual rear kit and it doesnt say anthing about removing the spare. I sent them an email to see if it will fit my needs, I'll let you all know

+1 the stock cat. is absolutely horrible when it comes to flow... then you add the small diameter exhaust pipe i believe its 2 1/4" piping from the manifolds and then gos to 2 1/2" that would be fine for the Inline 6 but for the 302 and 351... If you got to have a cat. then i would just run a new cat. and no muffler and even with no muffler it wont be that loud and will uncork your exhaust. After i put my true dual 2 1/2" with no cat. or muffler the truck was a completely different beast (previously having the stock exhaust on it) I noticed a fairly noticeable difference when i as driving up hills and towing a trailer because the exhaust really shined at the top end 2500rpm and up, i may have lost some low end because of not alot of back pressure but completely worth it in my opinion.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT do like above and run dual 3" from the manifolds back. You will not have enough back pressure and you will loose what littke bottom end the 302 has.
Unless you are building an all out drag engine dual 3" on a small block is no good

I had true dual 2.5" and Flowmaster 50-series on my 95 F150 with the 351 (393). Now on my F350 (460) I still have a "true" exhaust system, but have a Hooker Aerochamber dual 2.5" in and single 3" out in stock location. Sounds awesome, different, and not too loud. Good flow, and kept the torque.
