I have a beautiful '97 Ranger 2.3L I had the tires rotated and ever since I've had a terrible thumping in the front of the truck. I've had the tires rotated several times and had firestone replace the tires, but the thumping still persists. Recently I put new wheel locks on the mags, and the front wheel lock went on easily on three wheels, but the front passenger would not go on, as if it was bent. Any thoughts?
Welcome to FTE. This a good place to get lots of help.
To get that help you need to clarify some of your information. You say "it" was bent. What is "it?" Are you talking about the wheel and tire assembly, the hub, or some (or all) of the studs? I'm guessing it is the wheel/tire assembly. Are the mags original equipment or aftermarket? If aftermarket, what do you observe if you jack up that wheel and spin it by hand? Does it appear to wobble, look like it is out of round or off center?
You have had Firestone replace the tires. Did they check the wheels for wobble, being out of round, or being off center. If the wheels are aftermarket, I would suspect the wheels more than the tires as the source of the problem.
Thanks for your reply! I do have aftermarket wheels on my truck, I put Indy Firehawks on after I wore out the previous tires. They had been on the truck for approx 2 years with no problems. Then the Firehawks were on for a least a year before I had them rotated, looks like there is some seperation in the tire and I'm going to have Firestone check them.
The 'it' I was referring to was the wheel assembly, my mechanic checked it and found it to be running true.
Thanks for your reply. I agree that ply or tread separation would cause the thumping you are experiencing.
The problem with the wheel lock could be a result of a bent wheel stud or damaged threads on one of the spindles. If that is the case, get a new stud and replace the damaged one.
