I'm new to this thread so forgive me if this was already asked. I have a 1990 Ranger 4.0L extended cab with push button 4x4. I've noticed lately when I try to engage my 4x4 I occasionally get a clicking sound coming from somewhere and the light for the 4x4 switch doesn't come on. If I try doing this a few times it will eventually engage. Anybody have an idea what might be wrong? Thanks for your help.
A common problem with the electric shift on these is the shift motor gets dirty and sticks. Sometimes tapping the motor with a hammer will free it up. It can also be disassembled and cleaned.
Definitely what the problem could be. The noise is the relays clicking trying to activate the motor. Usually trying a few times will get it to work as in your case. The motors are expensive so if you are pretty handy see wha tyou can do by cleaning it.
Diesel dummy, Great link! This sounds exactly like what is happening with my Ranger. I'm not really a good mechanic so I'll bring the info you supplied to a friend of mine. He was a crew chief for an off-road race team, I didn't want to waste his time doing a whole diagnostic on my truck and I'm sure this will really help us pin point the problem. Thanks Budman2
