Neil, I have in-laws in La Plata. Nice enough town, but that part of the country just seems a little more prone to crime. One more reason I'm glad to have escaped.

I think I'll do the hose clamp thing mainly for when we travel. I have a fifth-wheel gate, but wouldn't want to loose it either.

First time my tailgate got stolen (previous truck) I cut a piece of stainless tubing that had an ID just a hair bigger then the mount. Installed that and never had an issue again. I've actually seen it ever so slightly ovaled not long after installing it from someone trying to steal it a second time.

F'ing thieves.

Nice Part of Town

Bunklash,

LaPlata is actually a very nice, very rural area. The Omish are still present. Crime in LaPlata is very low compared to 35 minutes away.

I guess I am going to go with one of the 2 I posted? I'd go with the Gate Keeper but the McGard and Bully both have a lock for the same money.

Thanks...

McGard Tailgate Lock

I got the McGard 76029.

Tailgate Lock - McGard: Innovative Security Products

First, the black casing is some form of plastic, not metal. Second, it is just an expensive hose clamp that requires a special key to move the worm drive screw as opposed to a screwdriver or 5/16 socket. At $16.00+, I guess it is worth it if your tailgate is never stolen but for those of you that have the ability to modify the worm drive screw of a hose clamp to use a special key or method for loosening, you do the math.

Hope this helps someone.

Simpler and cheaper solution. Costs under $2. Just use a small heater hose clamp. Open the tailgate, unscrew the clamp, wrap it around the right bottom hinge and screw it back together. Just make absolutely sure that when you close the tailgate, the screw is facing straight up. Keep your tailgate and cap locked.
