Good morning Justin.
With the weather cooling down this is the best time of year in Az.I can actually stay outside for long periods of time to work on my truck without overheating myself.
Have a great day.

morningish! just ordered an engine for the suburban! $1500.00 for a re man 5.7 vortec 4 bolt main. 3 year 100,000 mile warranty with labor. not worth my time to build one for that. they are around $1,000.00 in wrecking yards with 200,000 miles on them. delivered tomorrow!
they are even giving me core for my 2 bolt main with 6 spun bearings.
it is build by AEK which is who builds ford's factory re mans.

Hey guys, Can I ask a question about this forum?

.... I'm going to anyway

I started a couple of threads concerning the rebuilds of my 351w and C4 transmission for my '64 F100. Nothing overly technical, but it seems the only response I get is "those parts are junk order these from catalog.com". Is there a better place for me to search for these answers or am I just spoiled by the quick pace of the HAMB? It seems that there should/would be more info for guys like me, who like to tinker, mix, and modify parts.

Am I off base? Too new to know my way around?

What do you guys think?

(and yes, I know, that's 4 ?'s )

Well Nick, I peaked into one of those threads.. I agree that you are getting a direction to go with new parts from suppliers, and not so much the home brew method to more power. However, one fella did hit it on the head with an idea that you can expand off of. More air in, More air out, more power! It may be that its just that time when you get replies that arent quite assistful in the direction you are going.. Hang in there!

As for the more power.. My tip and trick.. Take your heads down, get em decked! .10 or so! Clay your pistons on assembly, make sure you have clearance from the piston tops to the valves. Dont go over .10, or you will have to take your intake in too and get it done with new angles.

Another option.. Punch your 351 heads out.. Put Chebby 350 valves in it. Do a little research, but the valves are cheap, and the valve job isnt bad either. This will allow your engine to breath like a monster! I never did it, but seen many who did! I couldnt bring myself to putting Chebby parts in a Ford.

Hope that gives you a little food for thought! Sometimes you have to hit the forums with something very specific to spark a debate! LOL!

Evening all.

This is what its come down to... Can't get the headers to seal, so going about it another way. And yes, it's the copper rtv!

1. Glue the gasket to the headers being bolted to a head I had laying around to hold it in place.
2. Wait 24 hrs
3. Put them on the motor in the truck.

PS- the easiest way to make more power with the 351/302 is more air/less restriction. The stock exhaust/manifolds suck!

Thanks for that info man! Lucky for me I have full access to a machine shop and will have a chance to do anything I want to this engine while its there. My goal is just to maximize performance while keeping everything marginally stock. I would like to build this engine once and only once. I don't intend to race with it, but just make a decent cruiser and highway hauler.

I did read about your good fortune over on the hamb.... it's nice you were able to help recover that guys ride.

I have also heard of the bigger chevy valves in the 351.... make it breathe!

Bart,
I think you went the best way. How can you go wrong with a 3 year 100,000 warranty for $1500. That is sure the way I would go. One thing I know is that who ever is the best rebuilder at the time builds for almost everyone.

Nick,

I didn't see your post but I think you did the right thing by asking. Sometimes if you keep your post at the top by asking more questions, I find many times others will chime in with answers that might help. Heck ask them right here. This Chapter has a bunch of great people with a lot of knowledge. Many of us are former professional mechanics or work as professional mechanic now, & certainly many are hobbiest that do their own work, & have great knowledge.

Craig

What a nice day indeed! I got more done on the dually! Pulled the inner axle shafts to get the old carrier out, and the new gears in! Limited slip!

Nick.. Another fun thing that I thought back on.. drop a 289 crank in it if you want it to wind up fast! Different stroke!
