I'm thinking about buying software and hardware so that my PC laptop can connect to my OBDII port on my '96 F-250 PSD. I don't only want to see trouble codes, but I also want to see sensor readings and all that good stuff. So far, I've found a little bit of information on AutoTap, Auto Enginuity, and EASE. What are my options, how much do they cost, where can I buy them, and what are the drawbacks and benefits of each?
AutoEnginuity, about $350 from Clay at Riffraff Diesel. I don't know anything about the other 2 but I really like my AutoEnginuity. It takes a bit to learn how to use it but its a very helpful tool.
AE here, too (96 7.3L). Get the newer USB model and use can use in on the newer CANbus models, too. You'll have to get the FORD Enhanced software package to get the data out of a 96 as it isn't OBDII compliant (good thing).
I know my 96 F-350 is NOT OBDII compliant. (Don't think compliance occurred until 99, at least on the bigger trucks, the '150's are a different discussion.)
If it was, you'd see a whole lot more info with just the basic AE s/w. Getting the enhanced s/w lets you see 'deeper' into the system, so it is a good investment anyhow.
