Where is E40D leaking

95 E350 diesel with E40D (I believe). Towed race car on trailer 150 miles with no problems. Towed home the same 150 miles. Got home and found undercarriage of van on passenger side from trans back coated lightly with trans oil, passenger side of fuel tank covered and race car coated lightly also. Fluid down slightly (one quart maximum). Couldn't find anything specific except the trans pan bolts on the passenger side 1/8 turn loose. Drivers side were all tight (except 1). Tightened them, cleaned the coating of fluid off, and drove it about 30 miles with seemingly no leakage. Anyone ever have this happen. Does it sound like it was the pan? I don't want to start my next tow of 900 miles only to have trouble.

The pan gasket is the most common leak point, but if you tow, especially in hot weather or at high speed there are two/three other common leak points.

The E4OD will often leak from the front main seal especially if the seals are old and stiff. THis will happen especially if your tranny fluid is hot, say over 210/220 degrees. The oild will drip out of the small hole at the bootm of the bell housing. Usually the leak goes away when the temps go down.

Another two spots are the tranny vent, and the dipstick tube. These will sometimes leak when the tranny is hot and the fluid is a bit high.

A 150 mile to shouldn't get the tranny too hot unless you are towing at say over 70mph, especially in a head ind and or hot day.

When I tow, I let the engine run for a few minutes before shutting off. This helps keep fluids from over heating due to all the heat stored in the metal parts dumping into the no longer flowing fluids when you shut down.

But is sounds like your problem is while driving which is probably the seal and maybe the other two spots.

Your tranny is pretty old and unless it was rebuilt sometime back, the seals are probably getting a little stiff and leaky. Also if your fluid is dark brown or black or smells smokey, then the fluid probably overheated and made the seals more brittle.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Thanks. I was towing at 75 MPH for several miles, 30 or 40. The outside temperature was in the 40s. It really wasn't wet around the hole in the bell housing. Plus all the spray was to one side, not evenly spread on the undercarriage. Fluid is good and red and doesn't smell burned. Van has 175,000 and when I bought it at 135,000 I had the trans fluid flushed.
Where is the vent tube? I guess I'll need to load up and tow 40 miles or so on a hot day and see what happens!
