Hi: I recently inherited my brothers 1976 F250 XLT Super Cab Camper Special. It is 2 wheel drive, with an automatic transmission.
I Just spent the weekend driving 500 miles to go pick it up, then 500 miles back home.
My questions are: It looks like he had a carb fire when he quit driving it, and it burned a couple of wires around the carb. Where can I find a wiring diagram for the engine to see what is burned, what might or might not be missing under the hood? It has a 4 bbl. Holley on it now, but haven't looked to see if the model number is still visible yet. What carb works best on these, as I am obviously going to need to replace this one.
Also, how can I tell if it is a 390 or 460? Haven't even looked for the VIN. number yet. It was dark by the time I got back home.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Chuck
Thanks for the wiring help. Is there more to this to find out what the numbers mean / what they are for / what they go to? I believe I have traced out the most burned wires, they are for the elec. choke, the cruise control unit ( I think ), and the a/c compressor. There are a couple of "connections" by the fire wall more to the drivers side of center that are melted fairly well but still seem to be connected. Haven't tracked down where they go as of yet.
I looked the carb over a bit more tonight, and found a "list" number on the front of the choke horn. It says List 9834. I have only found this referenced once so far, as being part of the Holley model 4160 group. When I try to look this model up with a vendor such as Summit, it comes back as being a 600 cfm. When I check the application for this carb, it doesn't list a 460, and says it is not recommended for this truck.
Is there another way to determine what this carb is and how big? It looks like the 4160 pics, with single inlet and all, but it does appear to have adjustable floats, unless that is due to it's age, and now it is not offered in this particular size?
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.
Go here: 1973-1979 Ford Truck Wiring Diagrams & Schematics - FORDification.net for copies of the FACTORY wiring diagrams.
Fourth character of the VIN, "Y" = 360 2bbl, "H" = 390 2bbl, "M" = 390 4bbl, "J" = 460
From the outside, there is no way to tell the difference between a 360 and 390. The only difference between them is the stroke.
The 360/390 valve cover has 5 bolts, the 460 has 7.
Wow!, just noticed this is a "necropost", coming up on two years old.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for the Link, Mike. I think I have found why the glass on bu lights and W/S fuse blew to smitherings, hence, fire, however no such thing as TOO much info!
When i saw wiring harness looped thru Granny strap btwn Cahl and hood, uh, yeah, Let's hear it for previous owners....Again, Many thanks....
I have the full wiring diagram set for the '76 trucks. I am going to get the pages copied so the original doesn't get all messed up. Send me you address, and I will send you a copy of the engine diagram.

I had a fire in the 'big city' 2 weeks ago. Towed home. Someone offered to replace distrib. and nearly made ME drunk the longer we worked on her! Shipped him OUTTA HERE. When saw what he did, pissed, I didn't do for myself, didn't even bring his timing light. She runs, but as we all should know, w/out knowing where fire started, driving would likely have the same results. Hence the Mitchell diagram, I already had.
*****IdBill; Greatly appreciate however live some 7 miles from mailbox. Please send regardless since will obviously have work cut out for me!
Managed to view 3 pgs of Fordication.com diagrams, b4 puter flipped me off. Kind of confused with those diagrams since do not think they had digital radios in the late 70's era......
Librarian sent me a link i will try this today. Previous Medico cond. has me rest today. Think b/u light wire coming off bulb doohickie, one issue, along with temp sw, being bare in 3 spots, ALSO taped in/butt spliced 4x, in 2 ft section. I'll get it 'er done but may lose a toe in kicking things until then!
Oh, O'reilly's auto MGR in my area is bringing HIS timing lite in so to set timing.

Don't let it confuse you, Ford did offer digital radios back in the day. Wasn't a very common option though, right up there with the factory CB radio. Check out option "A10".
I tracked back as far as I could see with dirt from county road I travel to home, dropping on me. Pretty sure the temp wire running behind block, 4 wires twisted 2gether 3 areas bare wire is the issue. I'm not convinced it is all that P.Owner has in store for me. Need to get off the hill; thanks for the help guys. Will tighten everything down and against my better judgment, let her run to see if fire season hits us again. If not, Will find a CONGRATULATIONS for meself while in town......
Mike, 4th digit is an 'M'. Do not recall when it was needed but She's a K series, like only 1% of F150 that yr were.
Yeah, I had forgotten how hot CBs were at that time. She had emissions so was Calif. sold, where so many had to be 'in' style.
She's my old beater now. Hay, water, dogs..... Willing to pay ga$ & fix myself than get newer and pay *%$%$@!@* for labor.......ForeverOnRoadDevotion
The original poster (from 2010) wasn't sure whether he had a 390 or a 460. you've got a factory 390 4bbl.
What's a "K series"? I've only heard that term relating to Chevy 4WD.
