carb vs. EFI mpg

I am trying to find out how much advantage an '87 EFI 300 has over an earlier carburated 300. How much more powerful are the newer ones? What sort of milage are people getting on various setups (gears, lifts, tires, transmissions)? Thanks

Mark

carb vs. EFI mpg

my truck is a 90 SWB regular cab with 5 speed and 3.08's. Stock it averaged 16 mpg, and occasionally hit 18 on teh highway. With headers and larger injectors I'm lucky to hit 14-15mpg on average, and rarely get over 16 on the highway. The best mileage I ever got was 19.6 on a trip back from DFW last fall and that was with the larger injectors and all. I couldn't believe it. My tires are 255/60/15's.

89 LWB Fleetside F150, 5spd stick unknown rear -- 16-17mpg average unless i'm ricing around
81 SWB Flareside F100, 3spd+OD stick unknown rear -- 20-22mpg average no matter what

Clearly my F100 (carb) had better mileage, but it did (rest its soul) weigh alot less. It was also all around faster and just plain better lookin

F100 rear was higher (numerically lower) than the F150's rear. 50mph was about 3500 on the ear-tach in second. I don't have my F100 anymore and my F150 doesn't have a rear cover tag. Judging from the numbers StrangeRanger put up at Fordsix (http://www.fordsix.com/tech/trucktranny/trucktranny.htm) it would seem like a 3.27 in the F150 and a 3.08 in the F100. Thats just a guess though.

I have a 92 F150 SWB 4x4. I average 13-14. I do get 15 when I take it to work due to majority hwy driving.

Pretty sure I have 3.55's and I have a 5speed manual.

In 1980, I bought a carbureted '79 F100. It was stripped, no air, no power steering, no nothing. I didn't know **** from shinola about Fords, having only owned Chevy's before. On them I was lucky to get 13 mpg. To my amazement, I got 22 mpg on the Ford on the highway (honest), and I don't check mpg until I have a 1000 miles of driving and fuel filling to work with. I kept the truck over ten years and never got under 20 mpg. When I bought another, it was a Ford and a good old straight six with fuel injection. This time, though, I wanted something heavier and with a few comforts like air and power steering. I paid for it with the gas mileage, but I still get 17 on the highway. With my slide-in camper, I get 15, never below. This is an '87 F250 with 3.55 rear (the '79 was a 3.07). I do keep it in good tune. If 15-17 doesn't sound too good, well, in those years I also owned another Chevy. With it, I was lucky to get 12-13 on it.

Can't beat the gas mileage with the Ford 6-

Meck

My carbed 86 (4x4, 4 speed w/o OD, 3.08 gears) averages 14-15. Strictly highway it will get slightly better; usually 17-18.

I used to have a 81 f-150 straight six 4x4 with the granny 4 speed and averaged about 15 mpg - 3.73 gears and 32s.
Now i have a 1995 f-150 injected straight six 4x4 with the 5 speed and it gets about 15 too - 3.55s and 31s.
The acceleration difference is amazing though that efi will run away from a carbed one any day of the week.

I went from ~10 with the carb to ~8mpg when the rods had .100 clearance to the crank, then up to ~12 with the EFI.
