Hey Guys,
This is my first post on here. I have been a fan of FTE and used a lot of knowledge from this site to save me many dollars. It is truely a great source for us superduty owners.OK,now my problem,I have a e99 cc 4by4 7.3l auto with 190k on the clock. Today it lost its go pedaL for a few seconds at 10-15 mph, then came back.I then drove it down the road at 55mph and when approaching a stop sign the "check engine light" came on and went right back off.It slammed down into lower gears. After turning for home it upshifted into second fine then slammed into 3rd and 4th but ran fine til i had to stop and "check engine light" came on briefly and it hopped and jumped until it shifted into gears, abruptly I might add. Question, is my trans going bye bye or could it be the vss?? Ford dealer said there were 3 sensors on truck, one on the diff and two on the tranny. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Sorry for such a long post..Thanks
Welcome to FTE...Is the motor running fine or is it cutting out, hesitating and dieing?
The VSS is bolted to the top of your rear diferential.Loosen the bolt, pull it out and clean it.See what happens after that.
The motor ran fine no hiccups , stalls or anything like that.I just ran the truck up and down the road near my house and have yet to make it do anything.I ran it through the gears both hard and easily but all shifted well.Could it be the tc going out?I just want to be sure it's nothing simple before i have to take the plunge for a rebuild.
Thanks Guys
I thought that when the VSS goes, it should flash on the trans?
I've seen bad VS sensors with different symptoms. Mine threw a SES light without any other noticeable issues. My neighbor's truck illuminated the ABS light and otherwise ran fine. Another friend had both lights plus the OD on the shifter and the transmission shifted horrible. Truck ran pretty poor as well.
I guess that thing can fail enough to cause problems with one more system while allowing the other stuff to work fine.
Get it to somebody with a code reader that will read our trucks. It could be a lot of things with these trucks and we will more than likely be guessing.
Code reader would be best. Without that I would change the CPS, TPS and VSS. The VSS -"usually"- causes the OD light to blink. Doesn't really act like the CPS, but hey, they go bad and everybody needs a spare. The TPS can be bought from O'Reiley's without having to buy the entire pedal assembly. It is a Dorman product, about $50.
For TPS verification, try using the cruise control and see if the problem goes away. The cruise circuit does not use the TPS.
