Backing up a Terabyte Hard Drive?

A bud's Terabyte network hard drive crashed recently.

On the assumption that we can recover the data, what's the best way to make sure we don't lose it again?

The maker of the drive in question now offers a 2-drive RAID solution.

Other ideas?

Windoze does not support RAID solutions natively. Linux does. However, I only know enough Linux to be dangerous, and my friend knows none at all.

Worst case scenario is to spend the next 2 weeks burning it all to DVD, but we all really have better ways of spending our time...

If you want to back up on the fly, raid is going to be it. Course now you have 2 drives that can go junk and leave you in the same position you are in. Electrical problems can destroy both drives at the same time.

I've had way to problems with CD's, DVD's being corrupt, some after just a few months time. Others I've had going on 5 years with no trouble but for data I do NOT want to lose, I put on a portable drive and just back up to that weekly. For me, that's the most dependable solution.

I just added a Hitachi 1TB external for backup. $70 online through http://bensbargains.net/
I then found a Western Digital My Book 1TB for $58. It is on its' way to me now. I will be using both for backup so if one goes I will have the other for use.

Can you use one of those services that does back ups? Carbonite, or another? Burning that many DVDs is probably going to result in mistakes anyway and probably wouldn't be very cost effective.

On a side note, if one were to need something as large as a petabyte, would it consist of a bunch of peta-files???

What I use at home for storing all my music and pictures is an old PC that I no longer use and network it to my main computer.
It doesn't need a monitor or a mouse, just a keyboard so it will boot up without any errors
I have three hard drives in it, one for the system and the other two for storage.
The two drives that are for storage are shared with the network with full access to all users for simplicity.
Anything I absolutely must not lose gets copied to both hard drives.
They are not striped together or anything, just two drives that I copy to both of them when doing archiving.
