Choices when replacing a HD
I'm upsizing a hard drive and I have a couple of options.
1. Since it's W7, I can hook it up and use a repair CD and my disk image.
(so they say)
2. I just downloaded Acronis TrueImage from Western DIgital ( free if you have a WD drive). It has a disk clone feature, but they want both drives hooked up at the same time for best results. (They say to use the cables for the DVD drive if you need to).
I'm leaning toward option 2, but I thought that I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.
Thanks,
hj
I have used the clone software many times and it works great..
The only thing I have to say is I would only do that if there are no other software issues with the current configuration..
If you are replacing the drive to fix a software issue then cloning will just copy the problem to the new drive..
In that case Option 1 would work better
Last (and only ) time I did a HD, it was a PATA

I sometimes suspect the current HD of being unreliable, but not the software.
- it will occasionally fail one of Dell's tests.
I also have a current image ( and a repair disk) in case I have issues.
I got the new drive from Wally. It's supposed to be brand new. There was not one document included with it to hint at what you were supposed to do.
My Dell 'User Manual' only talks about the physical process-- and even that's vague.
My $17 coffee maker has better instructions.

It too came with the cloning software which was so easy to use I was stunned. I'd highly recommend that as your option, FWIW and of course YMMV, IMHO, etc etc etc.

There is also a free downloadable utility known as Crystal Disk which I'd also highly recommend. Its a great snap shot of your HD's health as well as a log of sorts to keep track of the HD as it is used.
