Need help with Excursion climate control system!

My 02 Excursion climate control system makes the fan blow high all of the sudden and then low again all by itself. It is very erratic as the fan will be on low and then instantly start blowing high and is constantly fluctuating. I'm referring to the front automatic climate control system. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is a diagnostic sequence you can run on that auto unit. But I can't remember what it takes to start it (combination of buttons pressed). I will see if I can find the link and post it here. Or hopefully someone else will chime in.

Or, worst case scenario, you need a new control unit... pricey

RMBC Freeride-Thanks for the reply! Any further help would be greatly appreciated. This problem is a major nuisance and trying to manually override the system does not work. Do you have any idea of the price of a new control unit if I need to go that route?

Thanks!

Here you go: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-problems.html

Specifically the second post:
"To enter the self-test, press the OFF and FLOOR buttons simultaneously and then press the AUTOMATIC button within two seconds. The display will show a pulse tracer going around the center of the display window. The test may run as long as 30 seconds. Record all DTCs displayed."
I thought of one other thing too... when yours runs on high only, does the air only come out of the defrost vents? If so, you have an intermittent vacuum leak and it has nothing to do with your Electronic controls (good news).

Not sure what a new unit costs. I ended up getting one from a salvage yard and luckily they let me try it first because I know the guy there. Think I paid around $75~$100 used

I'll try the test in a few and see what happens and post the results. Thanks! Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that it won't be a vacuum leak problem. The reason I know is that I also have an 02 Super Duty and it has the defroster air problem when I switch to 4x4. I know it's probably due to a vacuum leak but I haven't tried to trace it yet. I found a new control unit online from a Ford dealer that gives me discounts and it cost around $485. Ouch!

Thanks again!

I just ran the self-test on the unit and then plugged in my Super Chip programmer and found the following error code. "P1211-ICP Not controllable- pressure above/below desired." From what I briefly researched on this code, it appears to have nothing to do with the climate control issue? This is the only error code. The engine runs great and I don't have any other issues. From other posts about the "P1211-ICP Not controllable- pressure above/below desired" error code, it sound like this code may just be a byproduct of having a high-powered tune installed?

Yeah, the P1211 has nothing to do with your climate control. It is caused by your programmer and is nothing to worry about.

If I understand it correctly, when you ran the self-check on the EATC, you would have got a code right on the display if there was a problem. Not sure how the code is displayed though.

After I ran the self-check on the EATC, the display lit-up the entire screen which appeared to be a default of a completed self-test but no error code or message was shown.
After your previous comment about a possible vacuum leak, I got to thinking. I'm aware of the vacuum leak problem causing the air to blow only through the defroster on the manual climate control system because it happens in my 02 F250. But I was wondering if a vacuum leak problem might possibly be the cause of the erratic behavior of the automatic system in my 02 Excursion also?

I say this because I live on a ranch in the forest of AZ and I have to engage the 4x4 to get up our driveway every day. Normally in tight turns the vehicles will bind in the front end in 4x4 mode which is normal, but the Excursion has been making a clicking noise instead lately. The 4x4 is engaged but maybe only partially? Can you tell me your thoughts on this and the best way to go about tracking down these vacuum leaks?

Thanks!

All I can really say is that you definitely need to eliminate the vacuum leak before going any further with the eatc. The EATC still uses vacuum to operate certain functions.

First place to look for vac leak is at the hub. Behind the front wheel ther is a hose coming down to the top of the steering knuckle. make sure it is on the nipple and not cracked or split. Then follow each line back up into the engine compartment and look for cracks or damage along the way. Also check all connections around the vacuum tank and vacuum motor. (both are located on the passenger fender in the engine bay.

Also, try manually locking your hubs next time up your driveway and see if it binds like normal in the turns?

Thanks for the advice! I agree that the place to start would be by eliminating the potential vacuum problem. I'll track down any leaks and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks again!

Last winter I had a problems with the fan running all the time even with key out. Replaced climate control unit with used one and no fix. Found a water leak getting into fuse box. Fixed leak and fan problem fixed. Put original climate control back in and have the other for a spare. If I recall vacuum worked duct work doors and switch for fan was electrical. There is a relay in the fuse box that works the fan.
