Two things i've learned from mine, make dang sure the glow plugs are getting power ( i thought mine were when they weren't) and make sure they work. The best way is to pull them and use an ohm (multimeter) meter. Next best is to un plug all of them and test them with a multimeter. Last option is unplug them all, test light from the pos battery terminal to the 'bullet' on the glow plug.
That and check that your timing marks are lined up on the pump and she should start.

Spray some starting fluid in her . I had a deisel as my first vehicle an the dam fuel gauge was bust would spay then crank then shoot black smoke all the way down the block never damaged that ole truck.
