Not starting

Alright, I'm trying to get the new engine started and it just wont!

I got all the air out of the lines, new O-rings on the return lines, fuel is flowing through the fuel filter just fine.

So today I try to start it again, plugged in the block heater for 2 hours, the valve covers were warm to the tough, cranked it, and all it does is puff white smoke.

I know all my glow plugs can't be bad, and even if they were it's 66F outside and the block heater was on, shouldn't that be enough to start it?

I just don't know what else I can do, besides getting all new glow plugs, and I don't want to use ether to start it.

Any ideas would be great.

Any starting fluid at all in a Glow Plug motor is foolish ... The Glow Plugs can and will ignite it.

What do you mean by "New Engine" ???
What has been done ???
History ???

Have you checked for fuel at the Injectors, however white smoke says Fuel not enough Heat two hours on a working block heater should do it without Glow Plugs though that would be the first place I would head ... Glow System & Plugs!

-Enjoy

+1 for for glow plug system check.
at the very least a test light will find the completely burnt out ones.
remember diesels don't start with a "spark" they start on "squeeze"
good compression is key,and you need to heat up the pre combustion chamber for a good quick start to save your starter.
replace any non working glow plugs as soon as possible is the very basics of maintaining the IDI properly.
block heaters should be used to help, starting fluids never should be (theres no need for it.)
the glow plugs are the essential basics for a good starting diesel.

just think of it for a minute.
the diesel starts on pressurizing the fuel so hard that it ignites!!!! pretty dang impressive.you want them chambers warmed up to help things along.this requires a lot of heat too.not just compression.

Incorrect ... the heat is generated by compressing the air, then fuel is injected into that hot air ... Bang!

The reason for high pressure injection is to atomize the fuel.

It's an old 7.3 school bus engine, all I've done to it so far is switch the IP from my old engine to this engine, and put the turbo back on, and I can tell this is a good engine cause it turns over really smooth and cranks fast, (something my old hydro locked engine never did)

I think I'm gonna play with the timing a little bit and see if that helps get her started, it almost feels like it's firing AFTER the piston was TDC witch would cause the white smoke.

If I have to I'll save up and get some new glow plugs, I know I should have done that already, but 600 for a new engine killed my funding, (yes that means I have over 3K in a none running truck!)

And NO, I will NOT use ether, or starting fluid, the last thing I need is two bad head gaskets, and cracked pistons.

EDIT: The new engine also has 144K miles on it, not too bad.
