Hi, as some of you know I have been having trouble starting my truck lately. The truck is a 93, F350 7.3 IDI , i recently discovered that i don't have a block heater, & i read on another thread that the batteries could be low causing the glow plugs not to get hot enough, so this morning i charged both batteries ( they weren't that low ) and still the truck turns over but not even trying to start although i noticed that i now get the white smoke when the engine is cranking. Is it possible that i could have burnt up one or more of the glow plugs by cranking it so much? I spent some time looking at the engine trying to locate glow plugs, all i saw was 8 things ( 4 on each side ) that are screwed into the engine & have fuel lines running to them i assume these are the injectors. Still don't know where glow plugs are located or how to check them.
check your glow plugs disconnet them from the wiring to the truck and use a test light, clip of test light on the + batt terminal.. then poke the glow plug end with teh point of the test light do this to each one and note them are lighting the light brite, not at all, or dim.. the brite lighting ones are good.. the rest replace..
You can always get them from FordPartsOnline for around $10.99. Not to hard to change unless the tip has swollen on something other than Motorcraft/Beru. Do a search on this site for changing glow plugs before you start. There are tips for safe removal. What you don't want is the tip to break off and fall into the cylinder.
just do it slow and after its threaded out spray some pb blaster down the glow plug to help dislodge some carbon from the tip and lube it to come out, then just turn the glow plug right to left a few times with your fingers tell it loosens up and pull up while turning.. spray more lube down the hole if necessary.. but dont fill the engine with pb blaster.. really just a squirt or 2 should do it.. put the new ones in with antiseeze on the threads.
spent an hour or so online, searched many sites including several ford dealers, could not find motorcraft glow plugs, could they be listed some other way?
