If it is running fine then it would most likely not be the cat converters. You would have some other issues with them being clogged and needing to be replaced. I would bet money that you have a similar issue like me where it throws a code for the gas cap but it something like the pressure cap I had.
I drove mine for 3 months before finally finding what the issue was and that was after several trips to my OLD usually shop and then they found it while at the dealer one day. This was one of the reasons I went looking for a new shop. Seemed like a simple issue but they could not find it.
It seems to be running just fine, but I decided to not take any chances and had it towed from Louisville, to Lexington Ky. The guy that I have working on it seems to think that there should be something else causing this issue. I had a local dealer change some injectors while they were doing my spark plugs this summer, and I'm wondering if that could be the problem.
I actually looked at trading up to a 2010, but I was getting offered only $6500 for my truck and I thought that was WAY to low. However, with spark plugs, new hubs, coils, injectors, and now this my repair bill for the year is WAY to high. What to do; what to do?
Thanks for your helpful comments everyone!!!!
IF THE TRUCK IS RUNNING OK, DRIVE IT! DO NOT LET ANYONE SELL YOU PARTS YOU DO NOT NEED!
Well I got another opinion today, and yes both cats are toast. The real issue is that my "throttle plate sensor" is also toast. Im not very mechanically inclined, but I have NO IDEA what a throttle plate sensor does. Evidently it's what regulates the amount of gas versus air, IDK. Regardless, this failure has contributed to my bad MPG lately, as well as my dead cats. Actually, the guy told me that the face of the cats was melted on both sides. Well, $2,800 later, I'l be on the road again. MAN THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!
Could this have been caused by the spark plug and fuel injector change that I had done this summer?
ask to see the parts!!! almost always when cats fail you cant rev the truck past like 3 or 4 k even when holding it to the floor. if you had a failure like that (by the way i have never heard of that) you should have had a CEL a while ago. if they say they dont have them, raise the dead in the main office, those cats are worth good money thru salvage if they are not trash
