Plan to do some fluid changes soon

I need to change the A/T filter and fluid, and the rear end fluid. Is there also a transfer case that need to be changed?

2007 Explorer 4.6L 4x4

Any tips on filter type and fluids to use and the amount needed?

Thanks

2007 4.6 awd specs

Automatic transmission (6R60)
11.2 quarts
Motorcraft MERCON SP ATF5

Rear axle fluid 3.5 pints
Motorcraft SAE 75W-140
Synthetic Rear Axle
Lubricant

Front axle fluid (AWD) 2.7 pints
Motorcraft SAE 80W-90
Premium Rear Axle
Lubricant

Transfer case fluid
(AWD)
1.3 quarts
Motorcraft MERCON
Multi-Purpose ATF

Don't forget to put in limited slip additive in rear ends if equipped.

I would like a tip on changing the transmission fluid & flush, from what I read it has to go to the dealer. b/c of a temperature sensing one way valve. I also read about removing the transmission line going to the cooler try flushing it that way, any advice would be great and pictures would be better. the dealer wants 280.00 for a tranny flush and filter job, and 150.00 each differential and 200.00 for the transfer case flush. The differentials and transfer case look very easy to replace fluids, I would just lke to get more information on the tranny flush.

Thanks for the reply, I now have a few other questions...

It does not look like I can post attachments

For the rear axle housing it looks like there are a drain and fill plug, same for the transfer case.

The front axle housing all I see is one plug about 2/3 the way up, is this to drain and fill? or do I remove the cover to drain?

The transmission I don't see any place to drain and fill.

How do I know if I have limited slip diff in the rear?

dont know on the 2007, but my 2002 has an aluminum pumpkin in the back. YOU drain with the 1 inch size plug at the bottom, then refill thru the 1/2 inch pipe plug 4-5 inches up on the side of the case. Yuo can use a 3/4 inch and 3/8 inch extension for a ratchet to get the plugs out- put in the square hole... Transfer case is similar, just drain and refill, but put MERCON V in the transfer case. Front axle has a removalbe steel pan on the front.. is the 2007 like that" If you can get the pan off, that will drain it and clean out. THen refill thru the 1/2 inch pipe plug. If the pan will not come off because of clearance, use a suction gug thru the 1/2 inch hole and just get out as much as you can then refill... THe transmission takes MERCON V. I just take off the pan, clean the pan, change the filter, wipe off the valve body, reinstall, and add 5 quarts of oil. Do it every other year, (30K miles) and dont worry about a flush or the other 7 quarts. 40% oil change every other year will keep it fresh and get rid of the crud that settles in the pan and around the body........ look at the tag on rear axle to see if it has LS, or look on the drivers door post.

Be sure before removing any drain plugs or removing the cover of the front differential that you are able to get the fill plugs out!

Thanks for the info you confirmed everything including the trans, my axle code on the door post is "45" so according to Steve a 3.55 Conventional.

Rod, Great tip would stink to have the fluid drained and unable to refill.

Just notice I don't see a dip stick for the trans, how do you add fluid?
