I want to change all my fluids to synthetic for better protection and maybe some freed up power. What do i need to change and what brands does everyone recommend?
auto tranny fluid?
differential fluid?
oil and filter?
I have nearly 60k on the truck-any problems with switching at this point?

I do not currently run synthetics in my truck, however in my car I run Mobil1 5/30 motor oil, Redline automaticic transmission fluid, and Redline gear oil. Anything from Mobil, Redline or Royal Purple is top notch stuff. You will need to carefully research whatever you purchase and make certain it is suitable to mix with standard fluids. You will never get every drop of fluid out in a complete swap, so your synthetics must be compatible.
I agree with Wizardvette. In my humble opinion those fluids mentioned above are very good. It's debatable but my list would read 1) Red Line, 2) Royal Purple 3) Mobil. You can't go wrong with any of the three.
Here in Pa., Redline lube (oil) will run you almost 10.00 per., while the Purple lube cost me 6.00 per., I'm not sure of pricing for Mobil's oil.

My 4.6 use 5.7 litres of oil (quarts ?) I would check in the owners manual to be sure of all the fluid capacities though. If you're planning on keeping the truck get a shop manual like at Wal-Mart. They are not bad for a quick reference.
OK, I checked my manual and for oil it takes 6 quarts.Rear diff is supposed to be synthetic fluid and my 2000 owners manual says it doesn't have to be changed. Is Ford right about this one?
I believe as long as it isn't submerged in water you don't have to change it, but dont' take my word on that one, this is only my second truck and i've never changed any fluids before.
