i think the best mod for a 300 is high flow exhasut and header or EFI manifolds if u gotta carb'd truck. next is workin on the intake, homemade FIPK will round everything out nicely. then maybe a ported n polished head to even the whole breathing thing out. adding #19 injectors w/ an adjustable fuel pressure regulator will take care of the lean problem. a new can w/ lifters is also another good mod to begin with after the exhaust.

The 300-6, all years, from the factory has forged rods and pistons. All aftermarket pistons are cast. The pistons I am going to use in my 300-6TT are actually for a 347w, a stroked 302. Very short, to be used with rods from another engine. Also, a ceramic coating goes a long ways towards reflecting the heat from combustion away from the piston, into the chamber where it can do some good. I am going to build a near-copy of my 300-6TT without a turbo, to see what kind of rpm's this thing can handle for extended periods. Then on to the next project- SOHC!

When I first got my 300 It was a miracle that thing even ran as good as it did! It was pumping oil on 2 cylinders, 1 cylinder was completely dead, and another piston had a cracked skirt! And get this, She could still lay 25 feet of rubber! HA! try that with your Chevy or Dodge! I bought the truck when it was 14 yrs old with 135K all in town miles running on Pennzoil. After about a year the no. 5 rod bearing let go and she knocked for better than a month ( still could peal tires too!) finally the knock got so loud that I couldn't hear the radio, So I decided to rebuild the 300. My truck is a daily driver, a work horse, and wrecker for Chevys and Dodges, And an off road machine. I decided to go a little further on the rebuild instead of just throwing standard parts back in. I had the block punched .040 over, the crank was turned .010/.010, and I went to oversized pistons (standard 300) and bearing (Cleavite) I wanted to get as much torque as I could afford, so I changed out the stock cam for an RV cam and I also tossed in a high volume oil pump for a little added insurance. I am still running the 1 bbl carb and stock intake, also the stock exhaust manifold (soon to be headers). I cut off both cats and install 2.5inch piping and a flowmaster 40 series muffler. I also changed out the stock coil for a high energy Accel unit, and added a KNN air filter. The truck is not any faster on the top end, but it has MUCH better acceleration than it used to, and it would out pull every other pickup at my high school. knocturnal, you don't need to build your motor wild, bolt ons are a great way to get power out of your 300. First off have you tried advancing your timing a little? Mallory, Accel, MSD, nearly all the major manufacturers build HEI systems and distributors for the 300 I6. KNN, Airade,Rush all have cold air intake kits for your 300 particularly efi versions. And lastly bolt on a good set of headers and a quality performance muffler granted you may not be able to keep up with a Mustang but you might just beat em out of the hole.

The 302 doesnt even belong in a truck yeah they're fast but when you load em down they puke all over! I hooked bumpers with my friends 82 Bronco he had lower gears than me and I still pulled him! The 300 is far better truck engine than a 302, besides that the 300 lasts longer. 302s dont seem to hold oil pressure once they get over 100k on them, And they get tired faster. Sure you can rev the 302 higher but what good is that when your pulling a heavy load, or driving off road? Ill take my 300 over any 302.

The auto would probably win over the stick unless you want your clutch killed. Tough to crawl überslow with a stick unless you've got überlow gears, low t-case and a granny tranny.

all he has to do is dump the clutch and then he's got the 302 beat with low down grunt.
