yea its a ****ty motor back in the day but the new ones have the bugs worked out and they are a quick motor. i drove my friends and i was like wow... it has an exhaust and intake but still this thing flew.. i wonder if i could get my 300 to go that quick
what ever you say man.. you musta drove a bad one i had my rounds in a 5 speed short bed regular cab... lets see. it did 65 in second and 95 in third and 4th i dunno but it shuts off at 115 it had an intake and exhaust but i was surprised how quick this thing was. it was a 2001 by the way i wanna be able to keep up with jeff < the owner > or maybe beat him

You sure this wasn't in something like a light a$$ Ranger? Sure, 65 in second and 95 in third is impressive for a Ranger, but it seems, at least to me, damn near impossible for an F-150, which, by the way, weighs a whole hell of alot more.

All that's telling you is the engine can rev (and that's how the 4.2 and a lot of other newer motors make their power). Why would that be so much harder to do in a heavier F-150? BTW, the 4.2 is available in F- and E- series only.
yea pal i know an f 150 when i see one. i know a ranger when i see one.. and seeing how the ranger has the 4.0 and jeffs truck does say F-150 on it... i mean come on now.. i was there to witness the speeds takein in the gears and all shifts were done at 5200 rpm and it shuts off at 5500
I have a 95 I-6 and one of my buddies has a 98 with the 4.2 v-6, both are short box 5 speed 4x4s and yes his will wax mine in a race. Pulling on the other hand there is no context the ol BIG 6 will pull like a semi. If its acceleration your after i suggest getting as much air into and out of the ol six. Get a K & N air Raid system $200, not just that damn air filter. Get a good flowing exhaust on that baby and she will haul some major butt. When you got some free time hook up to your friends truck and see what that straight six will do!!!
Your 300 I6 could be built to to blow that 4.2 V6 out of the water. Building any motor other than V8 is going to be very costly. You need to keep in mind the 300 6 has a 4inch bore and a 4inch stroke and it simply cannot be revved as high because it has such a long stroke. This is why the I6 makes so much torque and lacks horse power because it is a low compression engine. The V6 on the other hand is a short stroke engine with higher compression thus making less torque and more horse power. So the big question is what do you want your motor built to do? Do you want to be able to cruise the freeways effortlessly at 90 plus mph, go with the V6. Or do you want a motor that you can lug down and push and pull with, go with the 300. Personally like the the 300, it makes gobs of low end torque, it pulls strong and they run forever.
300s most certainly rev high. bottom ends are almost buller proof...will u make power up that high? not stock. build it up and u can wind it to 7G and make power. depends on how u wanna build it.
I agree the 300 six does have a nearly indestructable bottom end in fact I saw one that ran for 80k with a rod knock. But other things need to be put into concideration that I forgot to mention earlier. The valve train on a 300 can only take so many rpm before you start to float lifters and burn up cam lobes. Ford never intended the 300 six to be a high revving engine, about 4500 rpm. However with the right camshaft and lifters, the 300 can be twisted out 7000 rpm quite easily Clifford Performance manufactures a full line of parts for the 300: headers, intakes, pistons, rods, cam and lifter kits, fuel injection conversions, carburetors, you name it they have it. I have been following their catalogs pretty closely and prices have been coming down. Now if you want to get more top end out of your 300 I would start with a set of forged high compression pistons, a set of forged steel rods, I would think the stock crank would be strong enough.
With the bottom end covered next I would look into a high lift cam (roller cam and lifters would be best for high rpm)in your case probably 500 degree range. Next I would go to work on the head a good port and polish job will do wonders for how your 300 breathes. Depending on if you want to run pump gas or racing fuel I would go to stainless steel valves with titanium valve springs and retainers. Stiffer valve springs will handle more rpms.
With the internal taken care you need to decide what type up fuel system you want to run fuel injection or carburetors. Your ignition system can make or break a great engine, you may want to install a higher voltage distibutor. There are a few simple bolt ons you can get to spunk up your 300 without breaking the bank what type of bolt ons are you running already?
