Got into the truck to come home from work and couldn't get it into gear. Messed around a bit and found that the cable had become disconnected at the transmission. I was able to put it back, but it won't stay. Seems that the connector broke. There was a plastic piece of something directly under it.
I set the parking brake, manually switched the transmission into drive and I made it home. Didn't make it to the parts department in time, so I'll be using some bailing wire to hold it on 'till tomorrow night.
Any advice on the replacement process would be appreciated. I've already removed the console cover and can get to the cable from on top.
This is a really easy fix as long as you can get the plastic piece. I had it happen to me earlier this summer and called 3 shops to see what it might cost and 2 said more the $200 while the 3rd which is my shop of choice said less then $100. They happen to have the plastic piece lying around their shop and just charged me for the labor but that piece is not easy to come by from what they said. You would think that Ford would of held the transmission cable in place with something better then a plastic piece but oh well.
You should be able to get at it from underneath the truck.
Yeah you won't I got lucky and my shop had one lying around. The likely hood of that happening again is very slim. Any way nice rigging it reminds me of something I did a few weeks ago. I was at a wedding and the keg didn't have a handle on top to push the pumper down so I dug out my drill and searched the yard for a golf ball to attach a new one. My buddy called it redneck rigging.
Nice work javieljb. That's creativity and necessity at it's best.
Drew, your bit about the keg is awesome. It's amazing what we'll do for beer. Something similar happened at a field party a few weeks ago with us. The tap we had was nearly stuck, the pump wouldn't move. No pen. lube around anywhere but we had a bottle of olive oil (go figure). A little oil down the pump shaft and bingo, it freed right up. Beer flowed all night.
I'll have to keep this in mind with the tranny. Has Ford not realized that plastic is the week link and made a metal replacement? Is there an aftermarket peice available?
Had the wife pick up the cable today. I put it in after work. Wasn't too difficult. I should have waited for the truck to cool as now I have some minor burns from the transmission and exhaust pipe.
I think I need to adjust it now. Seems that it won't go into overdrive if I don't go to 2 first. If I go straight to D then it won't go to overdrive unless I pull it down to 2 then put it back on D. Any thoughts on the adjustment process would be nice. The only part that looks like I can be adjusted is a spring tensioner near the transmission.
That 6 dollar part, a screwdriver to remove the worn out grommet, and a pair of channel locks. Took 5 minutes to repair. That was much better than rerunning that entire cable. Saved my butt folks! Thanks a lot.
hey everyone, im adding onto this thread because i cant find anywhere else where this is being discussed!
The transmission shift cable full broke open on the exterior side of my trucks fire wall.
do i detach the cable from one end then fully pull it through on side?
thanks
