I need to add some coolant to my 6.0 powerstroke. What kind of coolant do I need to request at the dealer. I was going to get the motorcraft.
Any suggestions are appreciated! What does this motor like? Thanks in advance!
If your truck still has the same coolant in it that came in it you have Motorcraft Premium Gold coolant. I WOULD NOT mix coolant types. If you are going to do a complete Flush & Fill you do have other options but they will void your warranty (if you still have one) so something to think about.
at 40,000 miles my engine got resealed due to a gasket leaking oil around the head. He put in all new motorcraft i am sure. Just go get a gallon of motorcraft premium gold to keep as a top off in case I need some?

I've never seen a head gasket blow oil to the exterior.

Well I may have my gaskets backwards but oil was coming down the side of the head so I decided to let the dealer re seal the motor. It was under warranty and all I had to pay was 100 dollars for a ton of work. The guy that worked on it was one of my friends and he suggested we do all that to make sure it is right before it goes out of warranty.
The truck has 82,000 miles on it now and still runs great! Awesome truck.
oh and just FYI where is the best place to drain the coolant out of it and put new in. Also how many gallons does it hold?
Your system holds a total of 7 gal. of coolant so to do a flush/fill you would need 3 1/2 gal. of coolant for a 50/50 mix. Do a search for "coolant change 101" and you will find a good detailed write-up on the flush/fill procedure. Make sure to use DISTILLED WATER ONLY because the minerals in tap water are bad for your cooling system.Hope this helps!!
ok here is a dumb question.....why do you add distilled water. Why not fill with coolant totally?
Sorry but I am learning.
If you buy the Ford Gold coolant it is designed to be mixed to a 50/50 concentration (as is most coolant). Some coolant is sold pre-mixed but the Ford Gold is not. If you add the coolant without mixing it you could, depending on how much you add and the consistency of your mix to begin with, get your coolant to water ratio out of spec which is not good. Too much coolant to water ratio can alter the performance of the coolant. And BTW, the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask just before you screw your truck up because you didn't ask it!! LOL!!

To completely drain, take cap off degas tank and open radiator valve (lower driver side of radiator). Then remove lower radiator hose, then remove block plugs. Passenger side block plug is behind starter so might be more trouble than it's worth. If you don't pull it, about a gallon or so will not drain out. Also if your t-stat is cold some coolant might be trapped in top radiator hose. Won't be much, though.
To refill, pour coolant into degas tank (after closing valve and replacing plugs and hoses of course).
