ECT and EOT question from a new guy

I recently purchased an 05 6.0L that had 75K on it. I am new to diesels and the forum, and have been amazed thus far at the wealth of knowledge and experience on this board. I have combed through the tech folder every chance I get, and I have a situation that I am unsure of and would like some opinions. I installed a scan gauge to monitor the ECT and EOT. I drive roughly 5 miles to work one-way and usually let the truck warm up about 3 minutes prior to pulling out the drive-way. Today I drove in, and had forgetten something so I had to turn around and run back, and since I just had to run in the house I left the truck at idle out front, and my temps never got above 174 for either one. My biggest split between the two reading was never more than 9 degrees. I guess what my long winded *** would like to know is do I have reason to be concerned. I have read normal ECT is between 190-200, and EOT is 200-215. Thanks in advance.

Only concern at this point, is your short drive to work. It wont heat up enough to burn the soot out just from the idle time. Remember to really work it every week. If not, you might want to change oil sooner than normal. ( I was doing mine every 3000 on my short commute) Egr valve cleaning maybe be needed as a regular maintenance deal.

My EGR valve is a lot cleaner now that I'm commuting 20 miles one way. My truck hated the 6 mile drive.

Now that I was long winded on this answer, your temps. look fine!

Thanks for the reply. I also think about the short commute and the damage it might be doing. I unplugged the EGR valve about 2 weeks ago, and surprisingly no CEL, and no codes were thrown either according to the scan gauge.

It takes 10 to 15 miles at hiway speeds for the temps to come up and start to equalize. You are no where near that and the 6.0 does not like excessive idling. When I start mine I give it maybe 30 seconds and drive away. No hot rodding or heavy pedal till warmed up.

Just got my scan gauge II installed. Unloaded, I am getting EOT at about 203 And ECT at 198. Consistently about a 5-8 degree differential. I am so happy. I did have an incident about 5 months ago where, while towing, I had a small overheat and blewoff a fair amount of coolant. I ended up getting a new Degas cap and topped off with fresh coolant. Didn't have another problem on that trip or a subsequent 1200 mile long haul with my horse trailer. I will have to see once i tow what the differential is but I'm glad to see my normal temperatures for now. Currently I have ~165K on my 04

Make sure you only "topped off" to the bottom line, and not the top line.

Thats what i did. Currently the level runs halfway between the top and bottom of the adjusted sticker.

When I bought my 04, it doesn't have the sticker. I started reading this forum not long after I bought the truck and found the new level. Went straight out and lowered it. I have learned so much from this forum and it's amazing members.

Thanks again to all those I've learned from!

But what caused the overheating condition?
