The serial number (last 6 digits of the VIN) is six numbers long 1961/66. There is no letter after the 3.

If the first digit of the serial number is a letter, the truck is 1967 or later.

I need you to clarify the serial number, as what size engine the truck has (VIN code H) and what year the truck is...depend on it.

Ford used the H code in the 1960's for two different V8's.

F61 = F600 (gas).

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.

hey bill,

I am having some problems locating a vin for the truck that we have. It is a Ford 1978 model l-8000. The title reads vin number R80dvba5806. The tag in the door jam has long since been gone and we cant seem to find it stamped anywhere on the truck. Any idea where to look?

Thank You,

The tag (Warranty Plate) in the door jam (It's not in/on the door jam. It's either on the left door face below the latch or on some 500 and larger series trucks, on the inside of the glovebox door) has long since been gone and we cant seem to find it stamped anywhere on the truck. Welcome to FTE

The only thing Ford placed (glued) on the door jam (B pillar) was the white Safety Standard's Certification Label. This only has the production date, VIN and front/rear GVW's listed.

The Warranty Plate has the VIN, codes for the W.B. (wheelbase) / COLOR / MODEL / BODY / TRANS / AXLE / GVWR / YEAR / DSO.

There's no such thing as an I-8000.

R80 = LN800 diesel.

D = Caterpillar model V225-3208 636 cid diesel engine.

V - Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.

BA5806 = 1978.

I have no idea where the hidden VIN is stamped on 500 Series and larger trucks.

On F100/350's, the VIN can be stamped in several places:

On the top of the right (passenger) side frame rail just in front of or partially under the cab.

On the top of the left (drivers) side frame rail adjacent to the steering gearbox.

If you still cannot locate it, type a new thread in this forum asking this question.

btw: You may be able to get a duplicate Warranty Plate with all the correct codes stamped on it from martiauto.com.

Marti has ALL the data pertaining to 1967/79 FoMoCo vehicles. He got it from FoMoCo in the late 1980's when he found out that FoMoCo was gonna THROW ALL of it into the TRASH!
