I turned the key in my truck today and I didn't get anything, no sound, no nothin. The electronics were working so I know it wasn't the battery.
Any ideas or suggestions and how much it would cost to repair or how easy it would be to repair.
p.s.
I had my truck warming up early this morning and when I got back in I turned the key again (forgeting that it was already started) and it made the grinding noise and I didn't think much of it cause everbody's done that, but it was the first time I've done it in my 92 F-150, I think.
I was wondering if maybe my starter was going bad and that pushed it over the edge, but my starter seemed fine before. It would only take a couple cranks and it fired up so I don't know.
If you can get a good look at the starter there’s is a braded wire that leads from the starter to starter motor. This Braded wire has a tendency to wear thin and burns like a fuse. The braded wire is a part of the brush *** I paid $10.00 at le local rebuilders shop. Check it out and let us know how ,it turns out have a good day.
Most parts stores will test your battery for free.
If the battery checks out ok you might want to take a look at your cables. I had a 91 explorer that had similar symptoms, dome light and radio worked, but nothing happened when I tried to start it. I peeled back the insulation on the negative cable and found green crusty wires.
if the truck started fine (fine for some is not fine for others) then it quit just like that and don't hear anything. I would suspect the starter relay on the inner fender.
If the battery was not great or if you had a bad connection, you should still hear this relay. No relay click, no good relay. Also, you can test this for free by jumping the terminals on the relay.
Wel I asked my friend about it and he said to just tap the starter with a wrench and sure enough it started. Then i had to the same thing later that night (tap the starter).
Anyone know what that might be?
Thanks guys.
it's the solenoid on the starter, I had that happen on my 95. I'd carry a hammer with you wherever you go, but it will continue to get worse. I'd replace that starter solenoid ASAP.
