Whats the word with all the after market fuel system cleaners....i recently put in two bottles of the STP "complete fuel system" cleaner, and have noticed an increase is MPG of about 1.5 around the city...my little overhead is telling me 14.7MPG and that is all city. And let me tell you that the extra 1.5MPG is nice with gas prices soaring above 1.70!!!
Anyway, my question is, is there any harm in using these cleaners, and if so, what are they?? I have not really heard any bad things YET, but just wanted to see if there is a hidden cost with them.
Thanks for the input
I haven't used STP's fuel system cleaner, but I did drop in a bottle of Berryman's Chemtool Fuel Injection Cleaner and noticed my engine was idling a bit rougher and sounded a little raspier when crusing. I doubted I had done any harm...but some insight would be nice!!
My mechanic friend uses the BG fuel system cleaner all the time. He swears by the stuff. You can buy the in tank version at NAPA, pretty pricy compared to the STP stuff though. I think his shop has the air powered attachment that plugs the cleaner directly into the fuel rail, but I do see them use the in-tank stuff also.
With that kind of MPG increase I think I'll have him shoot some through the system when we align it in a few days.
Just read in the owners manual of my X that using any additive or premium fuel may cause rough idling and running until it is burned up and back to the 87 octane fuel. They don't recommend using any additive to the V10. First time I have seen this for any engine.
I have had good luck with Techaron additive (the same one they use in fuel at Chevron(?) in higher concentration) in other engines with no rough idling.
I too use the Techron fuel cleaner from Chevron. I pour in a bottle in a full tank every couple months - no problems at all but my MPG doesn't improve hardly at all (maybe 2 or 3 tenths better). Guess the system is about as clean as it'll get w/o running off the aerosol stuff and stopping the fuel pump etc.. I have heard of no problems w/ the STP cleaner either. Good preventive maintenance IMHO.
I know what does not help gas mileage hauling a 600 pound four wheeler into a 30 mph wind and having low temps of 20 below or less. It was painful filling up this week
I believe that Techron was the first high quality off the shelf fuel system and intake valve cleaner.I know it has been out for over 12 years. and the other makers followed suit within the last 5 yrs.(Makes me wonder if they held a patent on the stuff for a while.)It is expensive but the other high quality cleaners are also.
I have used Techron on a fuel injected motorcycle of mine in the past and it cured rough idling due to partially clogged and dirty injectors. It is best to use this stuff in the, consumed, tank of fuel before an oil change. That is because it will remove carbon deposits from an engine, transfer it to the oil,and they are abrasive.
Thanks for the tip on running a tank full before changing the oil, makes sense. I think I'll do that before I cange oil this weekend. Sounds like I'm in for some driving.
