Just curious, as this is my first diesel. How much boost is the gauge supposed to read when at max? Meaning, if I floor it should the needle bury at 4? Mine never gets past exactly half way. I'm asking because I went fishing with a buddy in his 6.4 Sunday. I noticed that up some of the canyon roads his boost would nearly max out on the gauge.

Again, rookie here so thought I'd ask. Thanks.

The numbers on the gauges are in tens. 10, 20 , 30... My top boost has been about 21 or 22 psi. Don't know what I'd do with any more boost than that,.

Thanks, and I agree completely. Was just curious why my buddy's would nearly hit the max when under power and wanted to make sure mine was "normal."

Thanks Epic.

Have you gone over Parley's yet with a heavy trailer? Seems like I remember you were going to do that. That is when you'll have an opportunity to watch the truck work at max output. About 2,600 rpm with 22 psi boost. Wow. That is where you really feel the 400 horsepower and 800 lb ft of torque. Mine will accelerate like mad at the top with 11K lbs on the back.

I can't get more than 22psi on my turbo. I've tried. I suppose we are just limited to that for some reason. I have to admit, it would be nice to get 35psi at lower rpms so I can avoid the 3K rpm shift points.

Not a really heavy test yet, but yeah I pulled a buddy's 24 1/2 ft boat up to Strawberry 2 weeks ago (via Parleys). He said it was about 7k lbs betwen the boat and the tandem axle trailer. Not a lot of weight but wow, I was impressed. I pulled my 19.5 ft boat up there every weekend in my 3/4 ton GMC 6.0 gasser and it struggled to do 55 without overheating. I bought this truck 1) because I needed a new truck and 2) I wanted a truck that would do anything I need/want it to for the next 10-15 years. We are looking at much larger boats now and have also been debating between a 5th wheel or a weekend get away home. We just put an offer on a place at Flaming Gorge, so it looks like the truck will primarily be for the new boat at least for the next couple of years. I tend to keep my vehicles for a very long time, in fact I still have the first vehicle I ever bought, a 1991 Toyota 4-Runner. I've had it 18 years....

Thanks Epic.
His 6.4L turbo system is completely different. The 6.4L uses LOTS of boost to drive the HUGE inefficient EGR system. The compound turbo system on a 6.4L is designed for up to 41 PSI of boost.

The one on your 6.7L is designed for a bit over 30 PSI. It doesn't take 40 PSI to make 350/650 out of the 6.4L; it takes that much to do so while meeting emissions laws. The SCR emissions aftertreatment system in the 6.7L doesn't require such a high amount of EGR, so a smaller and more efficient turbo system is possible.

So, if the block stays together there could be some massive gains with aftermarket turbos and increased boost. I can't wait to see the guys doing Pro Diesel Truck pulls to venture down that path.
