Rear Seals - 91'
Anybody had issues with getting parts for the Rear Axle Seals on their 91' F350? The axle is a full floating axle with inner and outer taper roller bearings.
All the part numbers from Ford, Lordco, Napa came up with the wrong seal. Usually their ID they came up with was 3 25/64" vs. the larger diameter required.
The factory seal had a weird "dust cover" that I literally had to pull apart as it was hung up on the shaft sleeve. I litterally had to pull the axle hub off as it was hung up on the dustcover on the seal.
Ended up going to a Seal Shop and have them size these seals for me.
Dimensions are: 4.751OD x 3.625ID x 1/2"thick.
Sure would like to know what went wrong here. I hear years ago the 87'-91' trucks were a famous for oil leaks on the rear seals.

I think the seal you want is a Scotseal Plus XL #34384
Its a two piece type design, with the outer seal riding on an inner seal. This design fixes the typical leaks that can be caused by the seal lip wearing grooves into the spindle.
One side of my truck was leaking, and I replaced it with one of these, haven't had any issues. You can look the seal up here: SKF Online Parts Catalog The dimensions look like they match up.

Thanks, the Scotseal Plus XL #34384 is the seal that everyone was trying to sell me (Ford Dealer, and aftermarket Parts Dealers) It does not fit my 91" F350 as my ID is 3.625" vs. 3.390" on the #34384. This seal ID won't fit, I tried sliding it on before I installed it in the hub and there is no way it would slide on.
I got only a 100k on the truck and there is hardly any wear on my shaft sleeve. I just polished it up a bit with some emery paper, no grove.
Unfortunately the factory seal had no part number on it anywhere so I was only able to match it based on size (OD/ID/Thickness)
My suspicision is that there may have been a change to the factory OEM seal Ford made, but it probably must have come with a sleeve kit
