I have a 78 f250 how do i tell what transfer case

should be on a tag on the case
but only ever seen NP205's in them
cast iron case

It could be a NP203 case as well, those are full time. If your truck is part time then yes its a NP205.

my shift pattern is lock,hi,neut,lo,lock. that's a np203 isn't it? 78 250 btw with a 460 swap if it helps...i didnt notice this thread was hella old. MY BAD!

did the NP203's have a 4x4 indicator light on the bottom center of the dash? Wasn't this kinda useless since 203's are fulltime?

I think the light was a "lock" indicator, so you didn't forget to unlock the t-case when you got back on the road.
