Transfer Case problems. Help!
I have been having a problem since I changed the fluid in my transfer case. I have 96K on my 90 XLT. I put the proper Mercon in it, and it is full. A noise appears to be coming from the transfer case when I shift from reverse into drive. It is a loud, slapping kind of noise, not a clunk, more of a sharp sound. It seems to come right before a u-joint sound would come, because rpm's have nothing to do with it. It's like the driveline hasn't engaged yet when the sound happens. I also have an increase in driveline vibration. Something is not right in the case. I'm going to have to bring it to a tranny shop. Do these symptoms remind anyone of anything? I have no idea what's going on inside the case. I think there is a chain or something in there but I have never worked on one. What does a t-case rebuild involve? Does anyone know how much an average tranny shop charges for one? I'd like to get an idea of possible causes before I go blindly into the tranny shop. The worst thing of all is that I am in the process of moving from Florida to Colorado and am due to leave on Wednesday. All I can say is "this sucks..."
