I bought an NP205 for a project I'm working but I think it might be broken. I have taken the cross bar off so each shifter rod can be moved independently. I have tried every combination of shifts but all I get is 4hi 4low and FWDhi but can't get the front yoke to disengage. If I push the shifter rod for the front yoke in the entire case locks up and none of the 3 yokes can be turned at all(like a parking brake).
Basically when I try to push the shift rod for FWD in(to put it in N) the entire case locks up.
I've never taken a Tcase apart so I'm not sure how they really work.
Sounds like something happened with the intermediate gears. The 205 is a really simple case to take apart. My suggestion would be to either find a diagram online, or slowly take it apart. If I were taking it apart, I would start with the PTO cover and the aluminum round rear cover. The round one allows the front output to be taken out once the yoke it off.
I'll order the seal kit this morning and take it apart and see what's going on. Does this sound like I need to replace something or just make an adjustment?
That looks a lot like what I posted. I really like his writeup, and apparently others do too!
The 205 is all gear drive, and I can't think of any adjustments that you could do to it. I really think something locked up the intermediate cluster, but without taking it apart, who knows...
Put the crossbar back on. The shift rails aren't supposed to be able to move independently. Put the crossbar back on and remove the two bolts on top of the case(recessed in the case). Under them you will find a spring and the detent ball. Removing these will allow you to shift the case with the tie bar on with little effort. You need to look down that empty hole when changing shift positions to verify the location of the detent.
Also, with gear oil in the case it will appear as though you have no neutral. The oil is thick enough that it will spin the front yoke even when it's in neutral, especially when there is no driveshaft connected.

I understand this, Main thing I'm concerned with is why the entire case locks solid.
As soon as the gasket set comes in I'll take it apart.
