is it possible to hook an extension up to the crank bolt, and up to an impact gun, and turn the engine over and get it to start, not the safest thing but i disconnected tranny, and flexplate/flywheel and starter obviously, but i want to start the engine to see if the back of the engine is leaking. so would it be possible to start the engine by spinning the crank with an air gun???if so from lookin at the front does the engine go clockwise or counter clockwise'
Engine rotation is counter clock wise from the flywheel end. If you have the flywheel off you should already very easily be able to see if the engine is leaking or not. No reason to start it
Should still see a oil stain from the leaking area. Could be a rear main leak or intake manifold or valve cover leaking.
These engines were never ment to start from the front end of the crank. The only thing that could work is a motor/alternator setup from a hybred design(seen a few on the net). Also with out a flywheel or flexplate WITH a torque converter attached, these engines will buck and run bad and probly destroy itself( ever try running a push mower without a blade?)
If you have a leak thats under pressure, best bet is pull the distrubtor out and get a oil pump drive shaft to run the oil pump with a drill. Thats how many of us "prime" the engine with oil on rebuilds so you won't have a dry start on the engine.
Yeah, exactly. Take a look at the back of the engine, and you will see where the oil is coming from. Just cuz its not actively seeping does not mean there will be no sign of its presence.
