Well i went a got me a 2003 6.0 F-250 Superduty this last week for my b day yes i i got myself i b day presant lol.
but i lay to rst my 1995 f-250 7.3 psd poor truck i just got tired of trying to fix it and dumping an insane amount of money into it
Let me make sure I got this right... You got tired of spending a lot of money so you bought a 6.0?!?! IMO that was the worst move you could've made if your worried about money. It costs around $4-5k to get a good shop to do an EGR delete, new oil cooler, head studs, and fix up the heads on those things for them to even think about being reliable engines.
Happy birthday brother and I hope that 6.0 doesn't drain your account like they do a lot of people out there. Make sure you get that Ford coolant out of it quick and put a coolant filter on it.
Well if you want to you can bury it at my house. I wouldn't have a 6.0 as a DD. I almost bought one super cheap cheap to make a workstock puller. My buddy just blew both headgaskets, stopped up EGR and not sure but think its got a bad seal in the charger too. All I gotta say is dont run an edge box. Granted he didn't hook up the egt probe so partly his fault but not just the first edge problem on a 6.0 I have seen.

Those problems have nothing to do w/ EGTs. Those are the problems known to the 6.0 and the reason for the lawsuit on IH and ultimately the reason that Ford and IH split ways and Ford no longer uses IHs engines. The 6.0 cost Ford too much money in warrantee costs and there is only one way to get them to even think about being a little bit reliable. Headstuds, deck the heads, new head gaskets, EGR delete, and new oil cooler while your in the middle of all that stuff.
If you leave the 6.0 alone and do your maintenance there fine. You try to pull more than the rig was made to pull or do bunch of mods to make more power your going to have issues. Granted head studs should have been installed from the factory. The bed plate leaking a bit is annoying but I can live with that. The emissions stuff can give you problems if you don't keep it up. But from what I've seen most issues are self inflicted. Just like any car or truck. You get a good one or a bad one.
Happy Birthday! I hope you wished for Good Luck when you blew out your candles!
All I can say is that as a mechanic as long as there are 6 liters on the road I will have plenty of work! I finished my 4th head gasket job on a 6.blow. We sent two away under warranty. That is out of about 10 customers that own them. One I have even done twice in a year and half after the studs were installed the first time. The last one was a bone stock truck with 98K on it but it has a salvage title so no warranty from Ford. The bill runs about 3-4K depending on what else we do while we are there (EGR cooler, Oil Cooler. head Studs)
none of that includes the injector and EGR valve problems they have! I am getting close to knowing the 6.blow as well as I know the only True PSD!
My '03 6.0 is stock. I have a flash programmer but do not use it. It is maintained as required and driven daily and I don't go easy on it. Occassionally pull a 34' 5th wheel. I have had very little problems. HPOP went out at 104k and Ford paid almost all of that. That is all I have had to do.
We've got a 07 F350 and if it wernt for the good looks of the king Ranch id hate it. Its noisy and sucks down so much fuel. However it has 23,000 on it and its got a speed sensor problem. Sometimes the speedo wont work and the truck wont shift..but it comes and goes. However a good friend of mine just bought a 06 f350 with 145,000 on it and loves it. Its chiped and has exhaust. And he paid 21,500!!! Couldnt believe he paid that much with that mileage..
6.0's are hit and miss on how good they are
but the EGR delete is almost required due to their failure and dumping soot into your coolant. or does it get oil into coolant?
I think its soot.
Anyways. it turns your antifreeze black. Which isn't good.
I haven't heard a lot of good things either in this part of the country. Kind of hit and miss like William said. Good luck with the new truck. I hope it works out for you scott.
