Can I get the air/crud out of the heater core without replacing it again? It only takes about 15 mins to replace but I'd rather save the $20 if I can.

was to remove the hoses from the engine side, and install a couple of female hose fittings on the heater hoses. Connect one end to the garden hose and flush one direction. Reverse the procedure to backflush. do this till you dont see anything except clear water coming out. One other thing I didnt do but might help is to fill the core with cooling system flush and let it set for a while, and then do the flushing.

I flushed the heater core both ways and got very little dirt etc out. Should I just replace it? Oh, and does it matter which heater hose hooks up to which tube on the core?

It may be rusted internally, if you radiator was nasty I don't see why the heater core wouldn't be. For $20, I would replace it

The hose on the right side (looking from the front under the hood) is the inner most hose. They connect side by side from what I remember
