I just bought a 78 F 150 4X4 has 351M and FMX trans. Have rebuilt 71 429 built into a 460 I want to put into the truck. Question is will the FMX trans last long with 460 power? Planning on pulling trailers. Also the 460 has larger torque converter pilot. Should I swap for a C6 trans? What parts should I need?
Just looked again I'm new at this. Perhaps it is a C6? On data plate its says the following Body is DA3, Trans G, Axle 16J Make any sense to anyone? Thanks
If it is the factory transmission, it is a C6 and it should hold up okay as long as it is not driven in an abusive manner. You may already know this, but the bolt patterns of the 351M/400 family and the 460 are the same. There may be a pilot issue as you suggest, but I'm sure that someone here has been through this before.
You might try searching pilot. It might be as easy as changing to a different pilot bushing.
Thank you all for the information. Perhaps you can tell me what transfer case it has. Only numbers I can find on it are C11415 and 9X15X. Do you all think the 3.50 rear end ratio will be alright with the 460? When I put the 460 in do I just need 460 motor mounts? Or do I need other adapters?
If your transfer case is full time you have a NP203, if part time it will be a NP 205. I am getting ready to do the same swap in my son's 79 Bronco. You might need a different oil pan with the sump in rear. L and L products have motor mounts, oil pan, and headers. You also get them from Jeff's Bronco graveyard. You might also look at getting a bigger radiator.
