C6 transmission swap ?'s

I am needing to swap out a c6 in my 78 f250 4x4 with a 429. the c6 in it now has 3rd out of it, but 1st 2nd and reverse are still. good is there an easier way maybe a cheaper way to fix that aside from replacing the transmission? or do you just have to swap it out? if so will any c6 do or does it have to be specific for that vehicle.

Do you know a reputable shop that can either rebuild it or send you to a good rebuilder? $500 maybe????

A replacement trans will have to come from 4x4 with a 460--you can't easily convert a 2wd trans, and the C6 has in integral bell with the pattern for each engine series, so you can't pull one from behind anything but a 385 series, or a 400/351m.

ok so another c6 from a 4x4 would have to used if i wanted a straight up drop and bolt up type deal. but the budget i am on dos not allow me to have someone rebuild it for me. is it something that i can do myself? the kit is only 120 from napa and is called a master kit. not sure if that has the stuff i need to fix the problem.

Once you see what is in the kit, it gets exponentially harder to convince yourself to do it.

Just sayin from my own experience...

Depends on how much you like messing with small parts. I think I would do it if I had a space, without a lot of other crap cluttering it to dedicate to performing the rebuild.

Might need a few six packs.

There are short tail and long tail 4x4 C6's. If yours was a part time it probably has a long tail. Make sure you flush your lines and cooler out real good, you don't want any of that old crap left in there going into your new trans.

New torque converter too.

Rebuild yourself? You will have a substantial chance of doing it more than once.

IMO, collect cans and bottles or cheat on your taxes or whatever it takes to get a professional, guaranteed rebuild.
