I have a 92 F150, 302 4x4 auto (e4od). The check engine light started coming on and off the other day, and after watching it there seems to be a pattern. The CEL comes on about a second after the trans shifts into third, and goes off a second after the transmission shifts into 4th. It does this about 85% of the time, the rest it won't come on at all. Occasionally it will come on in 4th going down the interstate and go off about 5 seconds later. It will not come on at any other time. I have a punisher valve body and the shifts are evident. I tried turning OD off a couple of times and the CEL didn't come on at all, but I didn't drive very long with it off. I can't tell any difference in the way it drives.
If I hook up my code reader, the led on the reader stays on solid. If I use the paperclip trick, the CEL stays on solid. It will not blink and does not give me any codes, not even a system pass.
I have done some reading about why I could not pull codes, but all I found was a generic "check everything". Any ideas on why I can't pull codes?
Yeah, that is what I seen, as my hint at "check everything". I have went through the basics on that list already (battery voltage/alternator output, starter solenoid, eec relay voltage). What is left is ohming the harness or checking for voltage at specific pins. I was wondering/hoping that someone has had this problem before or can provide some insight to narrow this down. I am not expecting anyone to figure this out for me and I know there is only so much you can do over the internet, but to go through that entire list without "cheating" would take me a solid week at best...wiring isn't my thing. This truck has an autostart and alarm system on it when I got it and just that alone is a wiring nightmare.
I suppose my main question is if my CEL problem is the normal no-codes situation. When you get a no codes problem, do you just get a system pass code and nothing else, or do you get nothing like I have, just a solid light?
If there are no codes from the initial KOEO tests and nothing in Continuous Memory you will get a pass code of 11/11 or 111/111 if you get three digit codes. Your CEL is coming on so you should at least get Continuous Memory codes.
