Intrmittent CEL w/no code-I think?
Howdy & good day to all FTE'ers
New to FTE posting so I hope I don't break any rules, here goes:
My 95 f-150 4.9 4x2 M5OD constantly stores one KOEO code (cant remember code#). According to my scanner decoder charts it is "PIP open." This code has been present since I got truck approx yr ago and after battery replacement few months back. Have tested for codes numerous times since new batt install and only "PIP open" code appears. Also successfully dumped (erased) stored codes after every checkup
Driveabilty symptoms:
CEL on sometimes for short time at take off following extended highway driving (20 mins or more) but not always.
Additionally CEL appears in stop&go driving but not consistently or often. So far, when CEL does appear its after warmup and only stays on from 5 to 20 seconds.
Occasionally truck stumbles or hesitates at take off and will surge/shudder at 2k+ rpm., however, CEL is not always on at same time.
Sometimes CEL on at takeoff with no apparent stumble/hesitation.
In my analog brain this seems to indicate CEL causation and stumble/hesitation/surge/shudder are not necessarily related.
I suspect stumble is pip related; lack of ECM timing advance definitely could cause hesitation or stumble.
Checked continuity on PIP plug doodad and cks ok. Wiring/pigtail issue seems to be next on that diagnosis check list
*My first question is: can/will PIP problem activate CEL? I may mistakenly be thinking CEL is primarily emissions related.
*Second question: (may be getting ahead of myself here) why no code stored for condition causing CEL? (unless of course CEL is PIP related reflected in "PIP open" code)
Any help in understanding and finding this/these gremlin/s would be most appreciated.
Headed to work now, will check back this eve, thanx for any input.

Code 213: SPOUT circuit open KOER only code.
I can think of a few ways to verify the SPOUT circuit is not open. One is to use a DVM to ohm between the PCM and the Ignition Control Module (ICM).
Another way is to mark the harmonic balancer, toss on a timing light them fire up the truck. See if the timing is above base (~10 BTDC). I think you should see something higher like 20-30 range at idle (??). If the timing looks good, remove the SPOUT plug, the timing should drop back to base (~10).
My Ford manual states to check the pin connections at the ICM, SPOUT and PCM too.

rla2005-great schematic thank you. Ah the timing light. Do not have one but this is good excuse I mean opportunity to purchase one. Dark and cold out now, tomorrow if I can sneak away for a bit I will ck pin connections.
nanr1-yes SPOUT is in place.
I am curious though if SPOUT from my 90 4.9 would work temporarily in this 95? I know there are variations, dist mount ICM on 90-remote mount ICM on 95 for an obvious example but the SPOUT appears to be identical?
