Gas nozzle latches removed

Gassed up my wifes Escape for her, and noticed for the second time recently that the nozzle did not have a flow latch. I didn't think much of it last time, because they do break and go missing once in a while. But this time I looked around and found that all the pumps had missing latches.

Here is why:
Keep Your Hands on the Gas Nozzle | NBC Los Angeles

I hope they come up with a fix soon. This is a big PITA. I haven't found out if it applies to diesel yet. Meanwhile, I am going to seek out a station nearby that uses a different brand nozzle.

Officials worry that people will try to get around the latchless pumps by sticking gas caps in them or some other device to keep the gas flowing without squeezing the handle.
Who would do such a thing?

We sufferd this mentality a couple years back in western PA. All the stations removed that latch. Ironically, the stations that have been built or renovated since have the latch.

We as a society put way too much effort in circumventing Natural Selection.

Well said. It is no wonder we are inundated with stupid people. We cultivate them.

I filled with diesel last night and the latch was intact. Makes sense I guess, since there is no vapor recovery system on the diesel pumps. Also, the nozzle was a different brand.

Interesting problem.........at least you get to pump your own gas!
Up here, the state told gas stations no topping off for "environmental" reasons, getting a full tank up here is as hard as trying to find a virgin in Bill Clintons 3rd grade class.

At least gas pumping keeps the meth heads busy up here.

there is one station here that got rid of them. i bet i could get a piece of wood and stick it in there and it would hold it. the time it bugged me is in my truck. on it i run on the low setting because the on my truck the tank is about 6 inch from the filler so on high it spits out some gas when it is full. so it is a pain to sit there and hold it at half filling the hole time, or when i want to fill both tanks at one time from 2 pumps, big time saver

I topped off my own diesel tank "to the brim" at the first station west of the interstate on Santiam in Albany on my way out of town last month.

You're right about the meth head, he couldn't have cared less, as he let me pump my own!

As it turns out... at $6 for two rolls of them, I'm in love with Velcro cable ties. They're handy for tying up cables... but I use them for everything else too. They're up on my list right next to coat hangers and duct tape these days. Right now I have a couple strapping my two bottles of Diesel Kleen to each other behind the bench seat so they don't tip and stink up the cab.

Rather convenient that I already have them in my hand any time I'm fueling up... they're just about the right length...

Edit: As a matter of fact Bill, I'll give you an amazing deal on these very specialized devices. (You can have a few at the next get together if you haven't already seen them at the hardware store... and realized that you couldn't live without them.)

Hmm, static electricity from the velcro might be a concern. All joking aside. I don't think I would use those. A block of wood sounds better.

Those cable ties are extremely useful, though.

In all honesty... it's amazing how well my gas cap seems to fit in there...

I got around the "no top off" rule up here with my old Ranger. I tell the gas jockeys the truth.......the tanks do not vent well with the emis. controls gone, please fill it SLOWLY!, if they fill it fast it will kick back long before being anywhere near full......That way I always get full tanks.

Just would not want to be the guy behind me in line.
