So the original GPCM went out and I replaced it with a used one. The used one proved to be faulty on the account that I got a P0672 and or P0674 everytime I started it cold, and had white smoke on start up. Sunday Peter (Duck_Fan) Threw in another used GPCM for me. When I went to clear all the normal codes I also had a P1670 sitting there (weird i know). I cleared all the codes so I would know if the new used GPCM worked or not on my next cold start. Next morning start the truck, no smoke no codes thrown. After work start the truck SES light comes on and i have a bit of white smoke. Check for codes I get just a P0674. Clear the code and go home. This morning Start the truck more white smoke then before but NO SES light.
So heres the Q would a faulty GPCM cause me to have a gp issue with out setting a code???
As for the random P1670 ( EF Feedback Signal Not Detected) I am assuming this is a random once in a mill. just happen to happen code because in every thread i read about this code I should of had a major issue with my truck for this code to be thrown. My truck has not hiccuped or died or anything for this code to have been thrown.
I'd guess there is some margin of error type thing built into the CA emissions stuff so that an intermittent or random computer signal doesn't permanently trip a CEL. If you continue driving it, and the smoking starts stay consistent, I'm guessing you'll trip the CEL again.
I'd ignore the random 1670 since it could have been caused by extended cranking from the GP issues.
I havn't had a long cranking issue though. It not setting the CEL seems to be a fluke also though since everytime i start it now my CEL comes back with gp issues listed. IO am going to pick up a new GPCM tomorrow

Nolan, let me know if you figure this out, because I think I may have the same problem. Everyday my truck starts right up but when I go camping where it is cold it takes me 3-4 times to get it started, so I changed the glow plugs and had my truck scanned for codes with no codes, but my truck still does it. How much does a new GPCM cost? and did you try to ohm the wires at the connector before it goes in to the valve cover? Thanks
I know you have the scan gauge thingie, but if you want, we can hook up my AE and see what we see.

Thanks for the offer stewart but i am going in for surgery friday morning and am out of time for diagnosing. I am headed to ford in a few to get a new gpcm
I have the same problem and put a new gpcm in but it still throws the codes for all the glow plugs and for the gpcm sometimes, it doesn't make any sense. Doesn't start bad but it's not very cold here in PA and it's always garaged.
