Question "0" lash valves

Started my 1962 Ford 223 engine today for the first time after a complete overhaul. It fired right up, but has the most unbelievable valve train noise. It really sounds like a diesel. I shut it down and checked all the vitals, and went through the lash set procedure. All were exactly at factory recomended clearance (.019) for I and E. Every part of the valve train is brand new, including the cam and lifters. Seems to be getting a fair amount of lubrication up top, with 60 psi showing on the gage. When I purhased the valve train parts, I noticed a difference between 61/62 & 63/64 valve train components. I have all "0" lash components. What exactly does this mean? The timing chain is "0" lash also. It can't mean zero valve lash can it? Crap!! I'm afraid to start it again. I have nearly 3K in this darn thing, and it just rattles.

I built the same block up in 1980, but switched to a 64 C4 head with the water jackets around the plugs for better heat dissipation. Got 275K miles out of that motor. I have about 3 minutes on this one.

Again...what is meant by "0" lash. Thanks.

Pat

I'm not experianced with the 223, but if you have hydraulic lifters, your lash should be "0".
Zero lash refers to the clearance between the pushrod and the rocker arm. You mentioned setting them to .019" THis means you have this much clearance in the same place we are talking about. I hope someone else here has your answer.

It is a mechanical (flat tappet) cam. Just does not make sense that a mechanical cam would not have SOME valve lash. Maybe "0" lash refers to the cam thrust or something? Could inproper rocker clearance make that kind of a racket?? Loud, sharp clackity clack. A stethoscope on the cover over a few of them is horribley loud. Anyone have any experience with this motor?

You do not use a feeler guage to set the "silent lash rocker arms" as Ford called them.

The old book I have says.... Place No.1 piston at top dead center on compression stroke. Push the eccentric toward the rocker arm shaft untill the plunger is completely pushed into its bore in the rocker arm. Turn the adjusting screw in untill the eccentric and plunger are held in the depressed postion. Slowly turn the adjusting screw out untill the adjustment mark on the eccentric is centered over the valve stem. Tighten the lock nut on the adjustment.

Do both intake and exhaust the same way, then turn to next cyl in firing order and do the same. 1-5-3-6-2-4

The adjustment mark they are talking about, is a stamped mark about 1/4 inch long, stamed in the side of the eccentric.

Good luck

Hey Packrat...you are exactly right. I bought the shop manual for 61 Ford trucks last night, along with the 62/63 supplement. They call them "zero lash mechanical automatic adjusters", and give the same procedure you cite for adjustment. Unfortunately, I did some damage in just those short minutes. Bent every pushrod and broke the rocker cam pin out of a few rockers. Got those replaced today, and the lash adjusted as you suggested. Went for a test drive tonight, and it just purrs. I was way confused about the "cam" at the rocker tip....thought everyone was talking "zero lash" camshaft or something. The valve train is exceptionally quite now, although last night I just kept hearing that clacking in my ears. Really a strange valve train geometry. Ford must have thought so too, as they only produced the "0" lash setup for three years 62-64.

Thanks for your time. I was ready to drive th truck off a cliff. 575K miles on this one family truck. It's been a great truck.

Regards, Pat

Hello Pat, Tryed to post a reply Sunday, but when they redid the board, I got lost somewhere in cyber spack, and had to request a new password. Speaking of "family truck" I was at the shop that is going to do my seats (someday) and a fellow had a 56 Chev. 2 door Belairthere, said he was born in the back seat of that car...now that is a connection....lol.

Congratulations Pat - like you I love the old 223. I have one in my 61 Unibody F100. I'll have to be careful when I build mine. I've rebuilt it once and I just left the rockers a little bit loose on each compression stroke and gradually tightened them until they quieted down - VERY unscientific! haha
